James Harris was the subject of a biographical sketch in Presidents, Soldiers, Statesman by H. H. Hardesty, 1898:
"JAMES HARRIS was born Dec. 25, 1822, in Tyler County, W.Va., of parents, Anthony and Littie (Stansberry) Harris, deceased. Jan. 22, 1889, he was married in Wetzel County, W.Va. to Anna M. Springer, who was born in Wetzel County, W.Va., July 1, 1857. Her father, Samuel Springer, is living, but her mother, Elizabeth (Fluharty) is deceased. One child was the issue of this marriage, Thomas M. He (James Harris) was subsequently married three times, first to Elizabeth Springer, who died in 1857, leaving these children: John, deceased, Uriah, Samuel K., Anthony, William and Caroline. His second wife, Esther Louis, who died August, 1863, bore him three children: George W., James M. and Davis M. The maiden name of his third wife, who died September, 1868, was Catherine Hardin. One child was the issue of this union, Minerva. Comrade Harris served in the war of the Rebellion with distinction and honor. He had been engaged in farming when he enrolled August, 1862, in Co. E, 11th W.Va. V.I, In 1864 he was confined in hospital five months, suffering with chronic diarrhea. In May, 1865 he was furloughed for thirty days and reported for duty at end of time. In the winter of 1862-3 he was detailed at Parkersburg, W.Va., as a nurse and served in this capacity until released from duty at the close of the war. He took part in several skirmishes and was honorably discharged June, 1865, at Wheeling, W.Va. His son John served in the late war and fell for the glorious cause he had upheld, being shot at the battle of Pocataligo, Greenbrier County, W.Va.; his first wife's brothers, Samuel and David, served in the late war, as did his second wife's brother Louis. Comrade Harris is a member of Steele Post, No. 61; he is a farmer with address at Reader, W.Va."
In the military discharge of James Harris, recorded in the Wirt County, WV Courthouse, James is described as "5'8" tall, dark complexion, brown eyes and dark hair."
The middle intial "M" for James was gleaned from the Pomroy Funeral Home record for Samuel following his death.
James' third marriage, to Catherine Hardin, is recorded in Wood County, WV. His fourth marriage, to Anna Marie Springer, niece of his first wife, Elizabeth Springer, is recorded in Wetzel County. More about the family of James and Anna Marie can be found in the Samuel C. Springer section of this publication. Samuel was Anna Marie's father.
