Wheeling Register, 3 Apr 1887 - "The funeral of Mr. John Higgins last Tuesday was one of the largest that has left Benwood for some time."

His burial record at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, states his parents as Peter Higgins & Br' Ferghely, which was a transcription of the handwritten name found in records at the City of Wheeling. My late cousin, Audra Wayne, copied the old burial records for a book on behalf of the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society, probably in the 1970s.

John married Mary Kelly, daughter of Patrick Kelly and Bridget, on 27 Sep 1855 in Marshall Co., WV. Mary was born about 1836 in New York or Ireland.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 6 F    i. Mary Ann Higgins was born on 16 Jun 1856 in Moundsville, Marshall County, WV and died on 4 May 1935 in Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV at age 78.

General Notes: Wheeling Register, Dec 17, 1895 - TWO MEN DROWNED. A Terrible Accident on the River at Benwood Last Night. -- Timothy Gateley, Michael Higgins, and Edward Southern Attempted to Cross the River on the Ice, About Half-Past Ten - They Broke Through, and Gateley and Higgins were Drowned - The Bodies Not Recovered. -- About half past ten o'clock last night a terrible accident happened on the river, at Benwood, which resulted in the loss of two lives. - The unfortunate victims were Timothy Gateley, aged thirty, an employe of the Wheeling Steel Works, and Michael Higgins, aged twenty-seven, a saloon-keeper. - A third man, named Edward Southern, had a very narrow escape, only saving himself by great exertions and presence of mind. - The three men started about half-past ten to cross the river on the ice to Bellaire, selecting a spot about half way between the bridge and the ferry landing. The river has been gorged at that point for two or three days past, but the ice was not very heavy and in attempting to cross after night the men ran an awful risk, as there must have been a great many thin places between the original cakes of ice, while other holes were not closed over at all. Such places could scarcely be distinguished in the darkness, and under such circumstances for the men to have gotten safely across would have been little else than miraculous. - When they had reached a point near the middle of the river, according to the information obtainable last night from Benwood police, one of the three men broke through. The other went to his assistance, and in a moment Gateley and Higgins were struggling in the water, Southern only making his escape from a like fate by the narrowest of margins. He could do nothing in the darkness to aid his companions, and both were drowned. Southern made his way back to the Benwood shore and gave the alarm, but nothing could be done, as it would have been fool-hardy to have made any attempt at recovering the bodies under the circumstances. - Both the victims were very well known in and about Benwood and their fate will occasion much sorrow in that community.

9 M    iv. Edward Higgins was born about 1867 in WV.

   10 M    v. William Higgins was born about 1870.

11 M    vi. Joseph Higgins was born on 2 Jun 1872 in Benwood, Marshall Co., WV, died on 26 Jun 1915 in Ohio County, (W) VA at age 43, and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.

12 F    vii. Kate H. Higgins was born in 1875, died in Aug 1876 at age 1, and was buried on 26 Aug 1876 in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.

4. Ann Higgins was born in Aug 1835 in Ireland, died on 28 Dec 1913 in Belmont County, Ohio at age 78, and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.

General Notes: Wheeling Intelligencer, Dec 29, 1913 - Bellaire Ohio - "Mrs. Ann McDonald, a well known and highly respected resident of this city died at her home on Guernsey St. yesterday morning at 4:10 o'clock, following an illness of a complication of diseases. The deceased was 80 years of age and survived by a son and four daughters. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Catholic church, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. Interment will be in the Mt. Death record: Parents stated as Peter Higgins and Mary Fealey per info given by Regina Collins, her granddaughter (daughter of Elizabeth). - Is this the same Peter who died at the home of his son, John, in 1881? John's mother is stated as Bridget in marriage and death records... Are Bridget and Mary the same person?

In 1900 Ann lived at 613 Main Street, Benwood. Sons at home were Patrick & Albert. [Albert appears to be the same as Edward in 1880.] Also in the home was daughter, Elizabeth Collins, and her daughter, Virginia. In that census, Ann said she had given birth to 10 children and 6 were living. She said she immigrated in 1863 but it had to be earlier because her children were born in West Virginia.

Ann moved across the river to Bellaire after James died in 1896. In the 1910 census of Bellaire, she was living with her children, all single, Sadie, Lizzie, Albert and Patrick. A niece [actually granddaughter Regina Collins], Gene, 23, was also in the home. Her year of immigration is stated as 1865 but that cannot be correct because her children were born in West Virginia.

Ann married James McDonald, son of Patrick McDonald and Margaret. James was born in 1820 in County Roscommon, Ireland and died on 7 Aug 1896 in Benwood, Marshall Co., WV at age 76.

General Notes: Death record of son, Edward, states his father was born in the county of Roscommon, Ireland.

Roscommon is one of the counties in the Province of Connought, Ireland. Connought is now spelled Connacht and includes the counties of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

Records indicate that James and Ann's oldest children, Mary Ann and James, were born near Keyser, Hampshire County, Virginia, now Mineral County, West Virginia. This family is possibly the one found in the 1860 Federal Census of Preston County, Virgnia, now West Virginia. The age of Anna - 36 - is a conflict, but cannot be ruled out. And John J. is listed as John M. in cemetery records.

Anna McDonald, 36, b Connought, Ire.

Torn obit from Kathy Roxby: "Mr. Patrick Higgins Dead - Mr. Patrick Higgins, one of Benwood's pioneer citizens, died at his home on main treet at noon Sunday after a short illness of pneumonia. The deceased was one of the best known residents of the town and was held in the highest esteem by his many friends and acquaintances. He was born in Ireland sixty-seven years ago and came to America when a boy, and settled in Benwood in 1859. He was employed as a puddler at the Wheeling Steel & Iron plant for a number of years and later became night watchman of the plate mill, which he held at the time of his death.....

Part of another obit: Mr. Higgins was one of the best known residents of Benwood. He was born 67 years ago in Ireland, but came to America when a boy, settling in Benwood in 1859. For many years he was a puddler in the Wheeling Steel and Iron company and later became night watchman. He held this position at the time of his death. He had been ill but a short time. Surviving Mr. Higgins are his wife, three sons and four daughters. His children are John, James and Charles Higgins and Mrs. William Pearl, Mrs. Mont Bonar and the Misses Alice and Katherine Higgins.

Patrick married Bridget (Brigid) Johnston,1,2 daughter of James Johnston and Attracta/Alicia Byrne, on 2 Feb 1871 in Wheeling, Ohio County, WV (St. Joseph's Cathedral). Bridget was born in May 1850-1853 in Sligo, Ireland, died on 13 Apr 1918 in Benwood, Marshall Co., WV at age 67, and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.

General Notes: Although her gravestone at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, states her birth year as 1850, her obituary says she was born in 1853. In her marriage record of Feb 1871, her stated age is 23, and Patrick's was 28. They were married the same day that her sister, Mary Johnston, married Patrick Brennan.

In the June 1880 census of Benwood, Marshall County, WV, Bridget was 27 and Patrick Higgins was 37. In the 1880 census, Cathern Johnston, sis-i-l of Patrick, sis/o Bridget, is residing with Patrick and Bridget.

In the 1900 Marshall County, WV census, Brigid's birth was stated as May 1851. Her death record said she was 65 at the time of her death.

Bridget Higgins was 61 and Patrick was 68 in the 1910 census of Benwood.

A Christening record is found with dated May 5, 1853 at Streamstown, Ballysadare & Kilvarnet Parish, Sligo, Ireland but the parents were Patrick Johnston and Bridget McHugh. It is unlikely theywere our Brigid's parents.

OBITUARY: Mrs Bridgit Johnston Higgins, 65, one of the most widely known and esteemed residents of Benwood, and widow of Patrick Higgins, died yesterday morning at 6:30 o'clock at her home No. 522 Main street, afer a week's illness of pneumonia. - Mrs. Higgins was born in County Sligo, Ireland, May 1, 1853, and came to this country when about 16 years of age. Death is indexed in WV Deaths as Briget Wiggins. Her tombstone states birth year as 1850.

According to her daughter, Alice, Brigid was called "Beezy" by family. Worked as servant before marriage in home of Mr. Peterson. He gave her a key to tea drawer, so she could have it when she liked. Housekeeper was stingy & mean.

As stated, she was called "Beezy." Was she the Bessy Johnson, Domestic Servant, age 21, in the 1870 census of Wheeling? A woman of that name was living with newspaper editor, Lucian Hagan.

A note from genealogy provided by Alice Higgins Roxby's granddaughter, Kathleen, "The sisters (Brigid/Beezy & Mary/Minnie) went to a Catholic picnic and met their future husbands. After a few more meetings, a double wedding was arranged."

Noted events in her life were:

From Kathleen Roxby, granddaughter of Kate's sister, Alice: never married though in love with ____ who she thought was lazy, her reason for not marrying. (My Mom remembered this as Kate loving married man.) He later married, but never forgot her & was last to leave her grave at her funeral (He was widower then). Supposedly said on day of his marriage, it was Kate he should
be marrying. She worked as a seamstress & loved to read. She helped rest of family by making clothes and lending money when possible. Gave my Mom lunch money even when Mom said it was not necessary. Mom later told me that she visited Aunt Kate in her old age - institutionalized - possible some form of dementia. I met her as when she came to LB (have photo of her and Gram).

Thomas Charles Higgins, one of five children of Charles and Margaret Brown Higgins, was born in Springfield, Ohio, on February 7, 1924. After ordination, Father Higgins was assigned to Maryknoll's Mission in the Pando Vicariate of Bolivia, where he served for 40 years, interspersed with periodic home furloughs. During language studies in Arequipa he engaged in work in the prison in Arequipa, which led to many spiritual and material reforms for the benefit of the prisoners, for which he received a commendation from the President of Arequipa's Supreme Court. In 1952 he moved to Riberalta in the Pando Vicariate and did fine work among the people living along the banks of the Beni River. Father Higgins' humor and wonderful disposition were characteristic of his presence everywhere. On the Beni, of all places, he had a little daschsund he called, "Nancy." He taught Nancy to say Grace Before Meals and at mealtime Nancy would bow her head and join her paws before eating.

OBITUARY -
Unknown Newspaper - Monday, November 17, 2003

William S. Rader, 89, an Air Force Brigadier General who flew missions over Europe and the Pacific during World War II, died of cardiac arrest November 5, 2003, at his home in Alexandria, where he had lived for 35 years. - General Rader flew 17 reconnaissance flights over the Pacific during the Battle of Midway. He and his crew ditched their damaged plane 100 miles from Hawaii and clung to a half-inflated life raft in 30-foot seas for 18 hours before rescue. - He later was in the bomber group that raided locomotive works at Lille, France, in 1942. He and his crew flew 72 missions, usually as the lead plane, targeting ball-bearing plants, submarine pens, shipbuilding works, a foundry and aircraft factories, without losing a plane or a crewman. A tour of duty was considered complete at 25 missions. - In the early 1960s, he flew "Looking Glass" missions, which ensured that if the Strategic Air Command was destroyed, there was always a military plane aloft that would serve as a nuclear command post. He retired with 8,000 hours of flight time in B-17 Flying Fortresses and more than 10,000 hours of total flight time. - Among his awards were the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. - He retired to Alexandria in 1968 and operated a car rental business in the early 1970s. Later, he was a real estate investor and landlord for area commercial and rental properties. - General Rader was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and enrolled in a pilot training program at the old Wittenberg College in Ohio. He left college to enlist in the Army Air Corps. - He later completed the requirements at the University of Maryland for a degree in military science. He was a graduate of the Air War College. - Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Stephanie C. Rader, of Alexandria, and a sister.

BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM S. RADER
Retired May 1, 1968 - Brigadier General William S. Rader returned to Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, January 20, 1965, to become the Deputy Commander of Strategic Air Command's 1st Strategic Aerospace Division. He had previously served there as the commander of the 704th Strategic Missile Wing (Atlas), and for a brief period, as deputy commander, 1st Missile Division, before departing for Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, in July 1959. At F.E. Warren Air Force Base, General Rader commanded the 13th Strategic Missile Division. - General and Mrs. Rader first came to Vandenberg Air Force Base (then known as Cooke Air Force Base) in the summer of 1957. The 704th was a unit of the Air Research and Development Command at that time. - A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, General Rader entered the Army Air Corps in November 1940, as an Aviation Cadet. Later, as a B-17 aircraft commander in 1942, he completed 17 sorties during the Battle of Midway. - On one mission over the Pacific, which lasted more than 17 hours, his aircraft was so badly damaged by Japanese guns it was unable to complete the return to Hawaii. For nearly 20 hours, the genera1 floated in the water supported only by a life jacket before being sighted by another B-17. - As flight commander of the 368th Bomb Squadron in England later in the war, General Rader made one of the first deep penetration, daylight raids over Europe. He took his unit, unescorted by the shorter range fighters, to a point more than 200 miles southeast of Paris. Despite heavy enemy fire, which knocked out two of his aircraft's engines and the manual elevator controls, he bombed the primary target and made it back to England on automatic pilot. For this, General Rader was awarded the Silver Star on August 26, 1943. - The general also led the Eighth Bomber Command's first division of B-17s that month against the ball bearing plants of Schweinfurt, in one of the most historic missions of the war in Europe. - He has studied at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, and at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he completed requirements for a degree in military science. - A graduate of the Air War College, General Rader has held many assignments which include deputy commander, 7th Bomb Wing; air operations officer with the Joint Task Force on Eniwetok; chief of the Tech Training Division, Headquarters U.S. Air Force; assistant for Operational Readiness Division, and chief for Plans and Policies, Headquarters ARDC; and, prior to his assignment to Cooke Air Force Base, he served as inspector general, Headquarters ARDC. - His work with the Air Research and Development Command earned for him the Legion of Merit, awarded for leadership and management of the Plans and Policies Office there.

168. Shannon Marie Pearl was born on 3 Mar 1978 in Wheeling, Ohio County, WV and died on 12 Aug 2020 in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland at age 42.

General Notes: From her husband on Facebook, 12 Aug 2020: "Monday night around 9pm Shannon had a ruptured aneurysmin in the back of her head that rendered her unconscious. The location of it near her spinal cord also gave her a cardiac attack which did its own additional damage. I was with her when this happened and she was in an ambulance within 15min and in the emergency room shortly after. Unfortunately the circumstances of the attack made any recovery almost impossible. The fine folks at Johns Hopkins were with her every minute and they also informed me that even if this happened while already at the hospital, or if this was something noticed in the past, there was very little to have been done to change the outcome. It was decided to remove life support on Tuesday afternoon but knowing what a sweet amazing angel she is and the fact that she is an organ donor, she continued on life support until 8:59am this Wednesday morning when they could gather a few deserving people who could benefit from this amazing woman like we all have over the years. There is a bumpy road ahead no doubt. I hope that I can rise up to her standard and I take comfort in knowing that our boys have been gifted with her strength and characteristics to help guide us through these times. We'll always love her, we'll always miss her."
