31. Christiana S. Bucher 1,2 was born in 1842 in Tyler County, WV.

General Notes: Christina/Christ Ann Bucher, age 26, appears in the 1870 Census as a housekeeper, residing in the home of Edward T. Smith, carpenter, in JACKSON County, W. Va. She has a daughter, Amanda Bucher, age 5. Also in the home is Edward's son, George H. M. Smith, age 23.

George H. M. Smith and Christena S. Bucher were married 20 Feb 1880 in Jackson County, W. Va. and the family is shown in the 1880 Census of Jackson County, W. Va.

#386/386
SMITH, George H. M., 33, Farmer, $3000, $374, W.Va., Pa., Ireland
SMITH, Christie A, 35, Va., Pa., Pa.
SMITH, Amanda, 14, daughter, b Va., Va., Va.
SMITH, Edward T., 60, Father, Pa., Pa., Pa.
BUCHER, Jefferson, 18, brother-in-law, Va., Pa., Pa.

In 1900, neither George nor Christina/Christiana are found. However, the daughter, Amanda N. F. Bucher, 34, born Sept 1865, and described as "niece," was residing in Jackson County, WV with Francis M. and James Shepherd. These men were the brothers of John Shepherd, the husband of Christiana's sister, Amanda Bucher Shepherd. That would make Amanda N. F. Bucher the men's niece, at least by marriage.

Francis/Frances M. Shepherd served in Company "H" First West Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. When the First Infantry mustered out, he was transferred to Company "F" Second West Virginia Veteran Infantry. Beginning in 1892, he received government pension Certificate #987296. He died 16 Aug. 1913.

In the 1910 census, Amanda V., niece, was still residing with Francis Shepherd; her surname is misstated as Shepherd. Amanda was a seamstress.

Francis "Frank" M. Shepherd died 16 Aug. 1913. In his obituary, Amanda's surname is again stated as Shepard.

Mountaineer, 22 Aug 1913: "Frank M. Shepard - At 6:15 p.m. Monday evening, Frank M. Shepard, 68, a bachelor and Civil War soldier, succumbed to creeping paralysis from which he had suffered for several years. On Wednesday night of last week he was stricken and never regained consciousness. Mr. Shepard was born in Wetzel County. He was Corporal of Company H, 1st West Virginia Infantry Regiment and served until the close of the war. He was shot through the neck in the battle of Cedar Creek. - He is survived by two brothers, George and James Shepard of Wetzel County, and one sister, Mrs. J. M. Burch of Trace Fork. A niece, Miss Manda SHEPARD, who has been his housekeeper for 20 years, also survives. Services were conducted at the home by Rev. Hopson of Sandyville. Interment in the family cemetery."

Although the obituary states that Manda survived Francis/Frank, it appears not to be the case. On June 4, 1913, Manda Shepherd, single, age 49, died as a result of poisoning by strychnine.

General Notes: OBITUARY - IRENE GORBY - Irene Bucher Gorby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis P. Bucher, was born near New Martinsville, West Virginia, May 1, 1884. Her education was limited to what she received from short terms of rural schools. The last one attended was Fluharty Run. - At the age of eighteen she began training as a nurse in the old Wetzel County Hospital, under the direction of the late Dr. J. D. Schmied. In reiterating her early experiences she frequently referred to the strenuous hours of work, when in cases of emergencies and epidemics, she would work for four or five days and nights, relaxing only an hour or two each day. She continued nursing until 1908, when she was married to J. H. Gorby, who had recently been appointed superintendent of the New Martinsville schools, and with the exception of one year resided in New Martinsville the remainder of her life. Mrs. Gorby found pleasure in attending different school activities with Mr. Gorby. - As a child, she learned to cook, bake and sew, and through extensive reading and careful practice became highly skilled in these household arts. She thoroughly enjoyed working with a new recipe, or an untried pattern in crochet, tatting or knitting . A hobby of hers was sewing draperies, slip covers, cushions and fine embroidery. Anything she made was as perfectly finished as possible, and she was very generous in using her talents and time for others. - Childless herself, Mrs. Gorby was a lover of children, and was loved by them. For their first foot wear, scores of babies wore booties made by her. She was unusually happy when she did an act of kindness or gave service for others. Not only did she spread her happiness to children, but older folk as well, whether it was taking some flowers, a plant or something she had made. She always had time to enjoy a morning chat with her different neighbors. Birthday anniversaries of her relatives and friends did not pass her notice. She shared in others' sorrow as well as happiness. - Mrs. Gorby was a very extensive reader in such fields as health, nature study, history and general literature. She had a very retaining memory and scanned carefully current magazines and the daily paper. She could discuss intelligently the proceedings of the United States Congress, and was following the World War in detail. It was her belief that the United States should assist England, both for the safety of our country and the moral problem involved, and never doubted for a moment that the Allies will not win.

Emma married John Henry Gorby on 12 Aug 1908 in Wetzel County, WV. John was born on 20 Nov 1872 in Wetzel County, WV, died on 22 Jan 1943 in Wetzel County, WV at age 70, and was buried in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville, Wetzel County, WV.
