OBITUARY - At her Crafton home on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Mary Scariot Frykling, age 95, of Crafton, formerly of Florida. Beloved wife of the late Gustaf E. Frykling. Beloved step-mother of Inger Zetterberg of Sweden. Also 3 granddaughters. Sister of the late Angelo Scariot. Born Mary Dolores on March 6, 1929 in West Mifflin, PA to Victor and Angelina (née Bettin) Scariot. She received a nursing degree from St Francis Hospital in August 1950 and board certification as a nurse anesthetist in 1956. Mary continued nursing for 45 years at various Pennsylvania hospitals: St Francis, Ohio Valley, McGee Women's, Temple University, and Allegheny General from which she retired in 1989. She and her husband relocated to Pensacola, FL where she continued part-time in home healthcare until 1994 and then as teacher’s aide in local public schools until the late 1990s. Besides nursing, Mary had a passion for education and international travel. At age 48, she received a Bachelor of Science in Education from California State College in California, PA (now California University). She taught at La Roche College (now University) in the 1970s. She visited more than 25 countries, especially Northern Italy and Sweden to visit her and her husband’s families. Her travels with the Brother’s Brother Foundation to administer vaccinations in the 1960s and 70s took her to Nicaragua, Bolivia, Honduras, and El Salvador. She was board secretary for the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists (PANA) in the 1970s and 80s. A voracious reader and music lover, she had a special regard for The Three Tenors. Mary was a political independent and proud of having campaigned door-to-door for H. Ross Perot in 1992 and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. She was known for being good spirited even when teased by family, friends, and colleagues. Mary was well cared for during her final years by family, friends, and professional caregivers Bernadette, Pamela, Renee, and Chrissy from At Home Senior Services of Coraopolis. Beloved aunt, friend, and former colleague, Mary is survived by nieces and nephews Barbara Stemmerich of Perryopolis, Shirley Karkalla of Monaca, James Scariot Sr of Las Vegas, NV, Ralph Scariot of Cecil, Susanne Potter of Corbin, KY, and Marsha Lang of Coal Center, and many other relatives. She was predeceased by niece Patricia Korintus Warner in 2010. Mary leaves behind two friends whom she viewed as family: Mary Agnes Cauley of Brookline and Evin Blevin of Natrona Heights, who was nursed back to health as an infant by Mary as a home health care nurse in Pensacola. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Brother’s Brother Foundation, 1200 Galveston Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. In accordance with Mary’s request, there will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in Ascension Church of St Philip Parish, 114, Berry St., Ingram on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 10 o’clock AM. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Burial will follow in St. Mark Cemetery, Kennedy Township. Arrangements entrusted to the HERSHBERGER-STOVER INC. FUNERAL HOME, 170 Noble Ave, Crafton.
