Phyllis LaMantia was born about 1920 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Antonio LaMantia (1876-1926) and Filippa Giusppina (Josephine) DiNovo. Siblings were Salvatore, Dominick, Philip, James, Rose, Paul, Augustine, Antonio (Anthony) and Mary.
Augustine Calderone, St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1937, was a first cousin of Phyllis LaMantia. Filippa, the mother of Augustine, was the sister of Phyllis' father, Antonio LaMantia.
Phyllis married Peter Gualtieri and they had two children, Peter (P.J.) and Mary Jo. P.J. died in an automobile-motorcycle accident in 1977 at age 20. Husband, Peter, died in 1994.
OBITUARY: Phylllis A. LaMantia Gualtieri, 97, formerly of Creekside, died on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor in Lousiville, Ky. - A daughter of Antonio and Josephine DiNova LaMantia, she was born on May 6, 1922, in Blairsville.- A true woman of God, Phyllis was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a graduate of the Cadet Nurse Program at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh. She retired from Indiana Area Hospital where she worked as a registered nurse in the pediatric unit. Phyllis never lost her zeal for helping others. - In her later years, she was often found encouraging those around her and offering a helping hand. - She will be fondly remembered at her last residence, St. Joseph’s Home, for her quick wit and love of song. She cheered the hearts of not only the other residents, but the staff as well. - She is survived by her daughter and very favorite son-in-law, Mary Jo and Bob Horrell, of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Erik Horrell and his wife, Leslie, of Louisville, Ky.; Michael Horrell and fiancee Valerie Kozachuk, of Chantilly, Va.; and Elissa Horrell, of Summerville, S.C.; great-grandchildren Matthew, Sophia, Owen, Lucy and Jacob Horrell; and many nieces and nephews. - She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter, in January 1994; a son, Peter James (P.J.), in May of 1977; brothers Samuel, Anthony, Dominic, Phillip, James and Paul; and sisters Rose, Mary and Augustine. Phyllis longed for the day when she would be reunited with her family and rejoices today as she once again gazes upon their faces and rests in the loving arms of Jesus. - Services included visitation and Mass at St. Joseph’s Home in Louisville, Ky., this morning. - On Monday, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. at The Church of the Resurrection in Ernest, with the Rev. Gregorio dela Cruz Soldevilla Jr. officiating. - Interment will follow immediately in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Indiana. - Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Indiana, is in charge of arrangements. - In lieu of flowers, please send donations in honor of Phyllis to St. Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor, 15 Audubon Plaza Drive, Louisville, KY 40217.
