IRENE KUBALA

Class of 1927

Irene Kubala was born in Austria-Hungary on April 3, 1899. She immigrated to the United States with her parents, John and Anna, both born in Vukovar, Austria Hungary, near the Blue Danube River, and not too far from Vienna. A brother, Edward, born in 1902, was also with the family. They arrived in the United States at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland on September 17, 1903.

The family settled in Oakmont, Allegheny County, and then had additional children - Katie, John, Anna and Joseph - before John applied for status as a Naturalized Citizen in 1917.

At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Irene was working as a servant (maid) at Pembroke Place, Pittsburgh, for the family of Francis Keating, a jeweler.

The 1930 census indicates that Irene Kubala, 29, was living on St. Mathilda Street, Pittsburgh, with Ann Kubala, sales person, and Helen Lynch, 23, also a hospital nurse.

By 1940, Irene was a nurse in a private home, while living in a boarding house on Rippey Street, Pittsburgh. Helen Lynch, nurse, also boarded there.
