OBITUARY: Sister M. Martine Kossack, of Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale, died June 9, 2002, in the infirmary at Mt. Alvernia. Born Louise T. Kossack on Aug. 26, 1918, in Rowes Run, she was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Jones) Kossack. She entered the community from St. Peter Parish, Brownsville. She is survived by four sisters, Elizabeth Kossack of Monongahela, Christine Ryan of Bethel Park, Ruth Dunbar and Mildred Hoffman of Pittsburgh; and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Dorothy Steinberg, Margaret Jenuwine, Alma Whetzel, Mary Duke and Helen Eicher; and a brother, William. Sister Martine's early years in the community were spent teaching in the elementary grades in Catholic schools in the Pittsburgh Diocese. In 1941, she began nursing education in St. Francis Hospital in New Castle and continued in that ministry until she came to the motherhouse in January of 1989. Here she offered her services as a volunteer in the Mt. Alvernia Day Care/Learning Center until she retired to the infirmary and joined the sisters in Prayer Ministry. Friends received at Mt. Alvernia on Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Wake Service on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Vespers on Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the chapel at Mt. Alvernia. Burial in the sisters' cemetery at Mt. Alvernia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Ministry, Formation or Retirement Fund, 146 Hawthorne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15209.
