OBITUARY: Barbara Ann Irwin, 54, of Meadville, and formerly of Ligonier, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at her home. Born in Latrobe Oct. 22, 1946, she was a daughter of William Shaffer and Hermina Heimbring Irwin. She was a 1964 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School and received her diploma in nursing from St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh and her bachelor of science in nursing from Pennsylvania State University. Employed at Meadville Medical Center as a registered nurse for the last 18 months and previously at Latrobe Area Hospital for 21 years. She was a certified diabetes educator. She was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church. A member of the Western Pennsylvania Association of Diabetes Educators, she was serving as president and previously served as treasurer, secretary and vice president. She also was a member of the Westmoreland County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, having served as president and vice president. She was selected as outstanding diabetes educator by the chapter in 1993. She enjoyed quilting and needle crafts, loved her three cats and family gatherings. Survivors include two brothers, Robert A. Irwin and his wife, Connie, of Stahlstown, and Thomas J. Irwin and his wife, Paulette, of Latrobe; a sister, Kathleen Carns and her husband, Theodore, of Laughlintown; a niece, Andrea Irwin; and a nephew, Daniel Irwin. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James William, and an infant brother, William Stephen. . Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Snyder Funeral Home Inc. and Crematory, Bell and 402 E. Church St., Ligonier. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ligonier, with the Rev. Joseph P. Maddalena as celebrant. Burial will be in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to American Diabetes Association, Westmoreland Chapter, 300 Penn Center Suite 700, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15235.
