Anna Ottilia Hocher was born on June 13, 1925 in Pittsburgh. Her parents were Andrew A. Hocher, born in Pennsylvania, and Ida O. Gehrig, born in Germany. At the time of the 1930 Federal Census of Shaler Township, Allegheny County, Anna was 4, her sister, Bertha, was 2, and her brother, Frank, was 1.

While a student nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Anna participated in the U. S. World War II Cadet Nursing Corps.
