Bertha's sister, Sister Mary Martina, Order of St. Francis, graduated from the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1908. She died in 1951, and her obituary indicates that she was the daughter of Charles and Barbara (Hart) Helmstetter. Survivors were her brother, Charles, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Gehl and Mrs. Bertha Hickey, both of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Mary Harper of Cumberland, Md.

Edward J. Hickey died August 31, 1939. Bertha Helmstetter Hickey died October 14, 1970. They are buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.

Marian Hickey, the unmarried daughter of Edward and Bertha, died in December 2009 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her brother, Frederick.
