At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Madeline Goss, 9, lived with her parents, Elmer and Ella (Kinney) Goss, at Blacklick, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Her siblings in 1920 were Charles W., Leo J., Raymond E., Margaret, Katherine and Teresa. Another sister, Alma, was born in 1912.

In 1920, Madeline, 19, was employed as a clerk at the post office.

She graduated from the school of nursing in 1926. In the 1940 census, Madeline, 39, was a Nurse Instructor and lived at St. Francis Hospital.

On November 27, 1941, Madeline E. Goss, a nurse, 41, married Henry Louis Grandpre, 42. His first wife, Mary Regina Hall, died in 1937.

Henry Louis Grandpre died on October 11, 1952. Madeline died on December 2, 1994. They are buried at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, Ross Township, Pittsburgh. All or most of the children named were Madeline's step-children.

CHARLES W. GOSS, well known postmaster of Expedit, is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Hastings, in Cambria County, Aug. 27, 1893, and is the son of Elmer E. and Ella (Kinney) Goss.

Elmer E. Goss was born at Sanborn, Pa., Nov. 22, 1866. He began life as a farmer but later engaged in the meat business at Sterling, Pa. After a number of years he removed to Hastings, having conducted a meat business until 1909. He has since lived at Expedit. In 1921 Mr. Goss leased the Judge Reed property in partnership with P. M. Kinney, which they later sold to the Hughes Coal Company. Mr. Goss established a bottling business at Expedit in 1913 which he has since successfully conducted. He is a Republican and a member of the Catholic Church. His wife, Ella (Kinney) Goss, was born at Beaverton, Pa., Nov. 19, 1869, the daughter of Charles and Marjorie (Boyle) Kinney, natives of Ireland, who settled in Pennsylvania at an early date. Mr. Kinney operated the Kinney Hotel at Hastings, Pa., for a number of years. He died May 21, 1897, and his wife died May 30, 1895. They are buried at Hastings. To Mr. and Mrs. Kinney were born ten children, as follows: John, died in 1877; Margaret, the widow of John Martin, lives at Houtzdale, Pa.; Bridget, the widow of Richard Bowen, lives in New York City; Bernard and Charles, both deceased; one child died in infancy; Thomas, born Dec. 23, 1864, lives at Expedit, where he is identified with the Hughes Coal Company; P. M., a sketch of whom appears in this history; and Ella Goss. To Elmer E., and Ella (Kinney) Goss nine children were born, as follows: Charles W., the subject of this sketch; J. Leo, born Feb. 4, 1895, married Mollie McHugh, lives at Expedit, and they have a daughter, Elsie Ellen; Raymond Ellsworth, born May 22, 1897, associated in business with his father, is a World War veteran, having enlisted in the navy May 31, 1918; Patrick Joseph, born June 24, 1899, died June 9, 1899; Madaline Elizabeth, born July 1, 1900, a student at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh; Margaret Mary, born March 11, 1903, at home; Catherine Marie, born Feb. 26, 1905, in religious life Sister Mary Rosario, St. Joseph's Convent, Baden, Pa.; Theresa May, born Jan. 31, 1908, at home; and Alma Grace, born Feb. 15, 1912, attends St. Joseph's Convent.

Charles W. Goss was reared and educated at Hastings, Pa., and also attended the schools of Cumberland and Frostburg, Md. He worked in the mines a short time and was later associated in the meat business with his father. In December, 1917, he enlisted in the navy and was sent to Newport, R. I., and later transferred to the commissary. He was honorably discharged in June 1921, as ship's cook, first class. He then returned to Expedit, where he was interested in the coal business with his father, as engineer of the Mountain Quality Coal Company. In 1922 Mr. Goss was appointed postmaster of Expedit. He has owned and operated a gasoline filling station since November, 1923, and is local agent for Gulf and Sinclair oils and gasoline. Mr. Goss is a Republican, a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4th degree, Knights of St. George and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He has many friends and acquaintances in Cambria County and is well liked.
