OBITUARY: Rose Alice Fleming, 76, a longtime resident of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., formerly of Hollidaysburg, passed away peacefully on Monday surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in California, Pa., daughter of William John and Bertha Mae Emmer.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, George E. Fleming, M.D.; four children: John E. Fleming Esq. and wife, Karen, of Hollidaysburg, George E. Fleming Jr., M.D., and wife, Lisa, of Bedford, Elizabeth A. Jones and husband, Thomas, of Severna Park, Md., and Dr. Thomas E. Fleming and wife, Dr. Anita Collins-Fleming, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; 12 grandchildren: Andrew Charles Fleming, Abigail Marie Fleming, Thomas Edward Fleming Jr., Ashleigh Claire Fleming, Isabel Champa Fleming, Katherine Rose Jones, Thomas Oliver Jones Jr., Alexandra Marie Fleming, George Edward Fleming III, Ian Michael Reiley, Matthew Greyson Reiley and Erin Reiley Ward; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas J. Emmer, D.M.D.; and a nephew, Thomas J. Emmer Jr. D.M.D.
Devoted to the Roanoke Rapids community for 28 years, Rose was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where she served in various capacities, including chairman of the Finance Advisory Council, chairman of the Social Concerns Committee, co-chair of the International Festival Planning Committee and chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council. For 22 years, she served as chairman of the Board of the Halifax Regional Medical Center Foundation. She also served as director of the Roanoke Valley Medical Ministries (a free clinic) for 14 years. Rose volunteered her time and efforts to St. John’s Ladies Guild, Church Women United, Good Samaritan Ministry, Halifax Northampton Medical Alliance, Roanoke Valley United Way Fund Drive and more.
While living in Hollidaysburg, the town that Rose always considered her home, she was equally devoted to community efforts. She volunteered her time for many organizations, including St. Michael’s Parish Council, Ladies Guild and Choir, Blair County Medical Society and Auxiliary, Hollidaysburg Women’s Club, PA Medical Society Auxiliary, Blair County Cancer Society Auxiliary, Altoona Hospital, Blair County Children with Learning Disabilities, Blair County Civic Music Association, Blair County United Way, Blair County Cancer Society, Hollidaysburg Free Public Library, PA Medical Society Auxiliary and more.
Rose was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend — cherished by family and friends alike. She was warm, genuine and thoughtful, always up for conversation and sharing in special times with her large family and circle of friends. She was great company, as well as a talented cook and an enthusiastic Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She had a natural way of making people feel comfortable, welcome and loved. She will be sincerely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Friends will be received from 5 until the 7:30 p.m. rosary service, today, Oct. 20, 2016, at the chapel of Askew Funeral & Cremation Services, Roanoke Rapids, N.C. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Father Wakesa Pius officiating.
