GENEVIEVE A. DREISTADT

Class of 1919

Genevieve Dreistadt was born in Pennsylvania on April 12, 1890 to Peter Dreistadt, a coal miner, and Katrina (later, Catherine) Guilliam, both born in Germany. At the time of the 1900 Federal Census of Baldwin, Allegheny County, Katrina had given birth to 10 children, 9 of whom were living. Only two were living in the family home in 1900 - Genevieve, 10, and George, 7. Some of the other children were Frances, born 1881, John, born 1878, Joseph, born 1888, Mary, born 1876, Josephine, born 1880, and Louise, born 1886.

The father, Peter Dreistadt, died on April 18, 1906. By 1920, the mother was living with married daughter, Frances Beyer. Genevieve was not found in 1910 or 1920.

In the 1930 census, Genevieve, a hospital nurse, lived at 223 South Mathilda Street with Mary E. Miller, a hospital nurse, as well as a fellow graduate of the St. Francis Class of 1919.

In 1934 and 1937 Genevieve, a resident of 4761 Liberty Avenue, is listed as a nurse in the Pittsburgh City Directory.

Genevieve Dreistadt, 4761 Liberty Ave Pittsburgh, is named in the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing list of Registered Nurses for 1940-1941.

In the 1940 cenus, Genevieve was still at the Liberty Avenue address, and her roommate was still Mary Miller.

By January 3, 1942, Genevieve had moved to a rooming house at 4744 Friendship Avenue. She escaped death when the house caught fire, killing two inhabitants, including St. Francis graduate, Marie Gabriel. The comprehensive story is HERE.

Katrina/Catherine Dreistadt, the mother of Genevieve, died on May 19, 1944.

Genevieve Dreistadt died on May 15, 1979. She is buried at Saint Wendelin Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Carrick, Allegheny County. Her parents are also buried there.
