ROSANNA CATHERINE CRONAUER BELL

Class of 1924

Rosanna Cronauer and Anastasia Cronauer, both graduates of the Class of 1924, were sisters. In a news article about the graduates of the Class of 1924, they were listed as Anna E. and Rosanna C.

According to the Rosanna's Social Security record, she was born on December 29, 1905, making her somewhat young to have graduated from the school of nursing at St. Francis. Typically, the youngest graduates were 20-21.

The family is found in the 1920 Census of Ashville, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. John Cronauer, 55, a coal miner, and his wife, Matilda (Hollis), 45, had three daughters, Matilda, 26, Anastasia, 17, and Rosanna, 13, and one son, Walter, age 3. A daughter, Alice Genevieve, born in 1914, died in 1917.

John D. Cronauer died in 1931; his wife, Matilda, died in 1957. The "son," Walter died in 1980, at which time his obituary indicates he was the son of Amos and Matilda (Hollis) Yowler, but had been raised by John and Matilda (Hollis) Cronauer.

Rosanna Catherine Bell married Winfield Scott Bell.

Winfield S. Scott and "Rose Ann" are found in the 1940 census of Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia, where Winfield was employed as an engineer for a coal company. The record indicates they had lived in Pittsburgh in 1935. Their children were Winfield S., Jr., 11, Jean A., 10, Connie L., 8, and John F., 3.

Rosanna's husband, Winfield Scott Bell, Sr., died in 1980. Their son, Winfield Scott Bell, Jr., died at Houston, Texas on August 31, 1987.

Rosanna's youngest child, John F. Bell, became a senior judge of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He earned his undergraduate degree from Washington & Jefferson College and his J.D. from West Virginia University.

The death of Rosanna Catherine Cronauer Bell occurred on August 16, 1989. She is buried at Chartiers Cemetery, Carnegie, Allegheny County.
