Class of 1926
Anna Cavanaugh, Registered Nurse, 35, born in Ireland, is found in the 1930 Federal Census residing on Lemington Avenue, Pittsburgh, with her cousin, Joseph Shea, 57, and his second wife, Catherine. His first wife, Wyanna Lyons Shea, had died in late 1922. Anna was probably Joseph's cousin via his paternal ancestry; his grandmother was Nell Kavanaugh of Ireland.
In April 1926, Anna filed a Declaration of Intention to become a Naturalized Citizen. She continued the process, filed the Petition for Naturalization, and became a citizen in 1929. Only the Intention document is presented here, and there is really nothing new in the later filings, except that the year of immigration is later stated as 1916.
The marriage of Anna "Anne" Cavanaugh, St. Francis graduate, and John Joseph O'Brien, was announced in the Pittsburgh Press.
The couple was not found anywhere in the 1940 census, nor was any record found of a man of that name serving as a Captain during World War I.
The Pittsburgh Press, dated June 1, 1935, published the divorce of Anna O'Brien from John J. O'Brien.
In Brooke County, West Virginia, on June 24, 1935, Anna Cavanaugh, 35, born in Ireland, living in Pittsburgh, married Phil J. Haney, 48, of Pittsburgh. The record said he was born in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, but perhaps not. Mr. Haney is found in the earlier census records, and he was unmarried and had a good job with the railway company.
Philip James Haney died about March 1, 1942.
To this point, there was no proof that the deceased Mr. Haney's wife, Anne/Anna Cavanaugh, was the St. Francis graduate. However, it was indeed proved when an application for Veteran Compensation for her military service was found. Upon her husband's death, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and served during World War II, achieving the rank of Major. She did understate her age, as many did, but this is clearly the St. Francis graduate.
At the time she filed the application for compensation, she was living in Colorado. She continued to be in the Army Reserves, and she retired on June 1, 1963.
Nothing more has been found about Anna/Anne Cavanaugh Haney, including in the Social Security Death Index. She might have married again, or maybe she never applied for Social Security.
It's somewhat unusual that there is no government death information for this Army Major. - Did she return to Ireland? Information about her death date & place will be appreciated.
