MARY CASINKO PAPI

Class of 1925

Mary Cecelia Casinko, Class of 1925, and Anna Elizabeth Casinko, Class of 1928, were sisters.

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census of Derry, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Mike Kozanko, 43, was married to Lizzie, 27, his wife (second) of 8 years. She said she had 5 living children. It is known that at least Margaret, born in 1896, was not her child; her mother was Mary Hajas, per Margaret's obituary. In this 1910 census, the children were Margaret, 13, John, 7, Mary, 5, Annie, 4, George, 3, and Mike, 1.

Mrs. Elizabeth Kozanko, maiden name Warjosko, wife of Mike, died of cancer on December 20, 1919, according to her death certificate.

The Social Security Application of Anna Elizabeth Casinko, indicates that her parents were Mike Kozenko and Elizabeth Vargosko (a variation of the aforementioned "Warjosko"). Presumably, she would also have been the mother of Mary Cecelia Casinko. Mary's application is not online but the Social Security Death Index states that she was born on December 3, 1903. In two Latrobe City Directories, the birth year is 1904.

In 1920, widower, Mike Kozenko, a coal miner born in Galicia, is found in Bradenville, Westmoreland County, with his children. They were: John, 17, Mary, 16, Annie, 14, George, 12, Mike, 10, Charley, 8, Joe, 6, Adam, 4, and Verna [Veronica], 1.

I the 1930s, Mary Casinko is named in some Pittburgh City Directories, a resident of Atlantic Avenue. She evidently worked for the City of Pittsburgh and is named in a news story.

Casinko

In the 1940 census, Mary was still in Pittsburgh, employed as a "Field Nurse - City."

The Casinko sisters are found in the online 1940-1941 list of Pennsylvania Registered Nurses, published by the State Board of Nursing:

  • Anna E. Casinko, R. D. 1, Box 128, Latrobe
  • Mary Cecelia Casinko, 637 City County Bldg., Pittsburgh.
  • Papi, the married name of Mary Cecelia Casinko, was gleaned from the obituary of her sister, Margaret, who died in 1980. Nothing more is known about the husband.

"Mary C. Papi, Nurse, City Dept of Health h808 Grimes Av." appears in the 1953 Pittsburgh City Directory.

Mary Cecelia Casinko Papi eventually returned to Latrobe and she died in January 1988.
