CATHERINE MARY CASEY

Class of 1923

A news article about the St. Francis Class of 1923 graduates indicates that this graduate was Catherine M. Casey from Pittsburgh. The records from the school further reveal that her middle name was Mary.

The following is a POSSIBILITY regarding the identity of this graduate, but evidence of her graduation from St. Francis has not been found.

In the 1910 Federal Census, James A. Casey and his wife, Margaret, both born in Pennsylvania, were residents of Bancroft Street, Pittsburgh. James Casey was a Cemetery Sexton. Their children were Catherine M., 7, James M., 6, Margaret A., 4, and Thomas D., 6 months.

In the 1920 census, the Casey children were listed as Catherine, 17, James, 16, Margaret, 14, Thomas, 10.

James A. Casey, 44, the Superintendent of Grave Diggers at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage on July 20, 1920. He is buried at St. Mary's.

FATHER'S OBITUARY: Pittsburgh Daily Post, July 22, 1920 - CASEY, JAMES A. - On Tuesday, July 20, 1920, at 1:20 p.m., James A. On December 26, 1929, Catherine Mary Casey married Warren William Megill. His name is misspelled, and this is the first time her name was found as Kathryn. But the name IS Megill, and Kathryn IS the same person as Catherine in the 1910 and 1920 census records.

Casey

They did move to Michigan and are found in the 1930 census in Detroit, as Warren, 33, and Catherine Magill, 27, both born in Pennsylvania. Warren was employed as a Machine Hand in an auto plant.

Warren W. Megill, born on September 2, 1896, had been in the U. S. Army during World War I. When he applied for Veterans Compensation in February 1934, he stated his present residence was "200 So. Pacific Ave., Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa." He names his wife as Kathryn Casey, and one minor son, Robert. - (Robert was born February 11, 1931.)

In the 1940 census, Warren and Catherine Megill, spelled McGill in the record, were back in Pittburgh and were living with Catherine's widowed mother, Margaret Casey, a resident of 5212 Coral Street, Pittsburgh. Warren and Catherine had a son, Robert, age 9. Warren was a laborer, building homes. Another error in the census causes confusion about the others in the house. It says, James, a son of Margaret Casey, was 9, which should be closer to 36. The others were Mrs. Casey's daughter, Margaret, 32, and her son, Thomas, 30.

Warren William Megill, age 46, born September 2, 1896, filled out a Draft Registration Card for World War II. At that time, he was still living on Coral Street. He gave the name of MRS. MARGARET CASEY, 5212 Coral Street, as a person who would always know his address.
