Class of 1934
According to her Social Security Application, Mary M. Bulman was born on July 9, 1900 in Rankin, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Richard Bulman and Margaret Groark (also Groarke).
Margaret "Maggie" Groark Bulman died in 1909 of septicemia, related to childbirth. At the time of the 1910 census, Richard Bulman, a Millwright, and his two daughters, Mary and Agnes, were living in Rankin with Margaret Groarke's siblings and her widowed mother.
The father Richard Bulman is undoubtedly the "Richard Bullam," a Millwright, who died (was found) on May 17, 1912, as a result of asphyxiation by gas fumes on top of the blast furnace at the Carnegie Steel Plant in Rankin. The death record has sparce information, provided by Ellen Bullam, identification unknown. In any case, Richard Bulman and his wife, Margaret, are buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
The 1920 census finds Mary "Boolman," 19, and her sister, Agnes, 17, living with three maternal aunts (Groark), their maternal grandmother, a cousin, and some boarders, on Second Street in Braddock.
On November 30, 1922, Mary's sister, Agnes Bulman, married Leo A. Patterson. Mary was her sister's maid of honor.
In 1930, Mary Bulman, niece, was living in Braddock, Allegheny County with her aunt, Anna Keating, and Anna's son, James. Mary was a private music instructor.
With no parents, her sister married, and her life before her, Mary Bulman entered the school of nursing at St. Francis. She graduated in 1934, then continued her education. The articles presented here are only a few of the many found.
Agnes Bulman Patterson died in 1980.
Mary M. Bulman died January 17, 1996. Her death notice seems inadequate, in view of how much she accomplished during her nursing career. She is bured at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
