According to her passport application, Sara Jane Boyle was born in Pittsburgh on June 17, 1878. Her father, John Boyle, was born in County Down, Ireland. Her mother was Sara Jane Callahan.

The family is found in the 1880 Federal Census residing on Butler Street, Pittburgh. John Boyle, 53, born in Ireland, was a boilermaker. His wife Sarah, 43, was also born in Ireland. Their children were Stephen, 22, and John, 20, both born in Scotland; Mary, 13, born in England; Sarah Jane, 11, Edward, 5, and Francis, 1, all born in Pennsylvania.

Sara Jane Boyle is named in a 1922 history of the Pittsburgh Red Cross as a nurse who was "in active service with the American Expeditionary Forces and in the United States." In September 1917, she made an application for a passport so she could sail for France with the Red Cross Pediatric Unit on October 6. The following news article indicates that Miss Boyle lived on Althea Street in Ebensburg, Cambria County. However, she actually lived on Althea Street in the Pittsburgh area with her sister and brother-in-law, Charles F. and Mary A. (Boyle) Sermin, and their son, Lyman. Sara is found with them in the 1930 and 1940 census records.
