The parents of Florence Ellen Boyd were Harmon and Emma (Stewart) Boyd of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Her siblings included sisters Ruth Ann, Helen, Mae Belle, and Mary Jane, as well as a brother, Clair. The mother died after the 1930 Federal Census, and the father remarried.

While a student nurse at St. Francis, Florence served in the World War II Cadet Nursing Corps.

Following her husband's death in 2009, Mrs. Huls moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, where she resided at the Elmhurst House of Friendship. Her son, Boyd, and family live in the Wheeling area.

HUSBAND'S OBITUARY--- Wilber Thomas Huls - Nevada Daily Mail --Wilber Thomas Huls, 85, of Hume, Mo., passed away Nov. 16, 2009, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo. He was born on Dec. 31, 1923, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of William Jackman and Martha Olive (Treffer) Huls. - Wilbur was united in marriage to Florence Ellen Boyd on July 5, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa; to this union two children were born. - He received his Doctor of Osteopathy from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Des Moines, Iowa. He practiced as a physician in Blue Grass, Iowa, for 42 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, past president of the Optimist Club in Davenport, Iowa, leader of the Boy Scout troop, member of the Blue Grass Fisherman Club, and a lifetime member of Amateur Trap Shooting Association. Wilber loved hunting, fishing, and was a great golfer. He retired to the family farm in 1989. - He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Letty and Ursula. - He is survived by his wife Florence (Boyd) Huls, of Hume; daughter Martha Goff, of Independence, Mo.; son Boyd Huls and wife Terrie, of Wheeling W.V.; and three grandsons, Nathan Goff, Dr. Brennan Huls, and Eric Huls. - Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m., at the Heuser Funeral Home, in Rich Hill, with burial in the Underwood Cemetery, in Hume. The family will receive friends today, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Heuser Funeral Home. - Arrangements are under the direction of The Heuser Funeral Home, in Rich Hill.

OBITUARY - Died November 23, 2023: Florence "Flossie" Ellen Boyd Huls, born February 13, 1925, in Jackson Center, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of five children. At age 19, during WWII, she completed registered nurse training in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and served as an Army Nurse until the end of the war. She then moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she accepted a surgical nurse position. It was there she met her husband of 62 years, Dr. W. T. Huls. They settled in Bluegrass, Iowa where they maintained a rural medical practice for 37 years. They retired to the family farm near Metz, Missouri in 1987. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is preceded in death by her husband and daughter Martha Emily Huls. She is survived by her son Boyd Huls and his wife Dr. Terrie Huls; two grandsons, Dr. Brennan Huls of Wheeling, West Virginia and Eric Huls and his wife Dr. Sandra Huls of Houston, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Autumn and Madelyn of Houston, Texas.

Interment took place in Underwood Cemetery on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
