Betty Eileen Bowers was born in Steubenville, Ohio on December 15, 1926, the daughter of Earl Louis Bowers and his wife, (Virginia) Mabel Westwood. Mr. Bowers worked at Koppers Chemical and they lived in Follansbee, Brooke County, West Virginia. At the time of the 1940 Federal Census, Betty had one sibling, a younger brother, Robert Earl.
During World War II, Betty was in the US Cadet Nursing Corps.
In Brooke County, West Virginia, on January 19, 1949, Betty Eileen Bowers, 22, married Walter Mason Hogue, 28, of Steubenville, Ohio.
When Betty's brother died in 2009, his obituary stated that Betty and Walt Hogue lived in Jackson, Ohio.
OBITUARY: Betty Eileen (Bowers) Hogue, age 96, passed away September 24, 2023, at Edgewood Manor in Wellston. She was born December 15, 1926, in Follansbee, West Virginia to the late Earl Bowers.
She is survived by her children, Paul (Donna) Hogue, Gregory A. Hogue, Elaine (Charles) Milliken, and Beth (Bart) Reiselt; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Hogue, whom she married January 30, 1949, and her son, Robert Walter.
Betty was a registered nurse, retiring from Adena in Chillicothe in the maternity ward, assisting in the birth of many friends and grandchildren’s births. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Session member, Choir, Bell Choir, and the Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Mothers Guild, Garden Club, and the Fine Arts Club. She enjoyed playing several games such as Bunco, board games, as well as reading, sewing, crafts and needlepoint.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 29th, 2023, from 11-12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, 225 Church St. Jackson, OH 45640. Funeral services will immediately follow with Rev. John Birkner officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
