Helene "Lena" E. Blotzer was born December 9, 1911, the daughter of Charles G. Blotzer, a steam railroad worker, and his wife, Barbara L. Schmaeling. At the time of the 1930 Federal Census, the family lived in Turtle Creek, Allegheny County. The children were Phillip J., 23, Margaret A., 20, Lena E., 18, and Charles E., 14. Lena was also listed in the 1930 census as a student nurse at the St. Francis Hospital Nurses' Residence.

Lena married Edmund Schumacher and their children were Charles, Barbara, Margaret and Philip Joseph. Edmund Schumacher died February 4, 1964, and son, Philip Joseph, died suddenly at home on July 29, 1964, at age 19.
