MAJOR MARGARET MARIE BITZEL

Class of 1924


Margaret Marie Bitzel was born on the North Side, Pittsburgh, on June 23, 1899. Her parents were Peter Bitzel and Christine Doersch.

Margaret started her career in the Army Nurse Corps on September 1, 1928.

She is found in the 1940 census residing in Adams County, Colorado, and employed at the Fitzsimmons General Hospital, a military hospital. She stated she had lived in San Francisco, California in 1935.

During World War II, in 1944, she was promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain.

Pittsburgh Press, Oct 4, 1952 -- "Major Margaret M. Bitzel, 100 W. Hutchinson St., received the Commendation Ribbon for her care and treatment of UN casualties brought into the 361st Station Hospital, behind the lines in Korea. Now attached to Brooke Army Hospital, Texas, she was chief nurse at the field infirmary during some of the heavier fighting."

Margaret Marie Bitzel retired as a Major in the U. S. Army on October 31, 1954.

Major Bitzel died in Texas on January 29, 1977, and is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
