At the time of the 1940 census, Sylvia Berg, 23, born in Pennsylvania, was a student nurse at St. Francis and lived at the nurses' residence. She is also listed in the family home, which, at that time, was Reiter Road.

During World War II, Sylvia served two periods in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps, between December 27, 1943 and January 30, 1946. At the time she entered service, she resided at Reiter Road, Universal, Allegheny County. When she filed a claim for compensation in 1950, she lived in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio, and her married name was Sylvia L. Whiter.

Sylvia's father, David, died in 1943. Her mother lived until 1992. They are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County.

The marriage licence application of Sylvia L. Berg, Universal, Allegheny County, and Paul A. Whiter, Akron, Ohio, was published in the Pittsburgh Press on January 10, 1946.

Born April 17, 1917, Sylvia Berg Whiter died September 28, 1983. The Death Notice in the Pittsburgh Press indicates that she had four children and eight grandchildren. Her husband died in 1988. They are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County.

SON'S OBITUARY: Mr. David Jerome "Dave" Whiter, age 63, of Lexington, Indiana, entered this life on November 7, 1946 in Akron, Ohio. He was the son of the late Paul & Sylvia Berg Whiter. He was a graduate of New York University. He was inducted into the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and served aboard the USS Bache. He was employed for 39 years with the IBM Corporation having worked in New York, Boca Raton, Florida, Austin, Texas and in his office in his home in Jefferson County, retiring as a software engineer. Dave died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 11:50 p.m. at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, Indiana. - A LOVING FAMILY - Dave will be missed by his life companion, Linda Chilton of Lexington, Indiana; his children: Jonathan & Marin Whiter of Deerfield Beach, Florida; his brothers: Mark Whiter & his wife, Cathy of Atco, New Jersey and Phil Whiter & his wife, Theresa of Northport, New York; his sister, Cass Robertson & her husband, Pete of Holmes Beach, Florida; and numerous beloved nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Paul & Sylvia Berg Whiter. - Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., by Bro. Garry Sandusky at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Ceremonial Unit and Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion. - Friends may call Sunday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:30 a.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
