Dorothy Battung, born May 3, 1922, the daughter of John Anthony Battung and Lenora Egler, joined the Army Nurse Corps and served during World War II.
In April 1946, Dorothy, age 23, got a license in Pittsburgh to marry Walter J. Kaczynski of Cleveland, Ohio. They were married May 4, 1946. Walter was the son of Polish immigrants, John and Amelia (Maliwinski) Kaczynski. Apparently, some family members, including Walter, changed the surname to DRAKE.
In 1950, Dorothy applied for compensation related to her service during WWII, at which time her surname was still Kaczynski.
Walter John Kaczynski-Drake (August 23, 1915-June 24, 1979) was a Captain in the Army during WWII. He is buried at Simons Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ohio.
Information about Dorothy's WWII service is found on the website of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. - Dorothy Drake Collection.
Dorothy's sister, Alberta, died in 2008, at which time Dorothy was alive.
