ANN MARIE BALLABAN DEVINE

Ann Marie Ballaban, born December 16, 1925, was the daughter of Matthew J. Ballaban, a steel worker, and Mary Horvat. Matthew had immigrated from Yugoslavia in 1912 and became a Naturalized Citizen.

In 1930, the family lived in Braddock, Allegheny County. The children at that time were John M., 7, Helen, 6, Anna, 4 1/2, Thomas, 3, and Peter F., a newborn.

By 1940, the family lived in Donora Borough, Washington County. In 1938, they had another son, Charles J., and after 1940, they had a son, Matthew J. - Charles J., age 6, died of encephalitis in 1944.

During World War II, John M. Ballaban, a Private in the U. S. Army, was killed in action on April 5, 1945. He is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Ann Marie graduated from nursing school in 1948, and in 1950, she was listed in the Pittsburgh City Directory as a Nurse, residing on Bryant Street.

Mrs. Mary Ballaban died on May 31, 1952. In 1955, Mr. Matthew J. Ballaban died of cancer at St. Francis Hospital. They are buried at St. Dominic Cemetery, Donora.

Ann Marie Ballaban married William D. Devine, Jr. She died on November 9, 1979.

HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: Wiliam D. Devine, Jr. - Age 93, peacefully, and surrounded by family, on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, of Brookline and Brentwood. Beloved husband of the late Ann (Ballaban) Devine; loving father of William (Jacqueline), Timothy (Ann) and Patrick; proud grandfather of Julia, Austin, Nathaniel, Patrick and Madelyn; son of the late William D., Sr. and Alice Devine; brother of the late Grace Scott, James and Robert Devine; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Bill worked for the United States Postal Service for 33 yrs. until his retirement. He was a volunteer for St. Elizabeth food pantry as well as Mercy Hospital, and was a member of Pleasant Hills Men's Club. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227, Monday from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church at 10:00 a.m.
