Ohio "Veteran Volunteer" Medal

Back of Medal

Presented by Linda Cunningham Fluharty.

The state of Ohio authorized Tiffany & Company of New York to provide 20,000 medals to recognize those soldiers from Ohio who re-enlisted from the state under War Department General Orders, No. 191, which called for "Veteran Volunteers." These were soldiers who completed their tour of duty and then signed up for further duty as a Veteran Volunteer. The medals were distributed in the summer of 1866 and are engraved with the name and unit. Today, the conditions of the medals vary greatly but are often found in parts.

According to collector, Ralph Baughn, "The Orders and Medals Society of America wrote in Vol. 29, No. 3, page 12, March 1978, that "it is probable that the medals were sent out through the mail." Yet, decendants of some veterans said their ancestors had journeyed to Columbus to pick up their medals. A scan (click here) shows an envelope containing the Adjutant General's letter, awarding the medal - and perhaps the medal itself. The veteran named on this envelope is Joseph W. Davis of Co. B, 32nd OVI who lived in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. The postmark would indicate the mailing happened in July, presumably 1866. The marking "Veteran Medal" in the upper right corner makes it clear as to the purpose of the mailing. It appears the medals were mailed to some veterans and others picked them up at Columbus."

(NOTE: Ralph Baughn is looking for the medal of Joseph W. Davis.)

He somehow lost it on a farm where he worked in Buffalo County, NE. There, it was found by a daughter of the farmer about 1931 or 1932. She retained it and published some information on the internet. I read that information in 2001 and contacted her. She then mailed it to me. - My uncle, who is now 92 years old, vaguely recalls the medal and wished for me to have it - I have it mounted on a hook within a bell jar display." - In a message received in March 2013, Tom Fitch said, "His medal is now in the possession of Christopher Nye Fitch of Virginia, 2nd Great Grandson of Alva Levi. I transferred the ownership to him so he can pass it down to his son."

Medal owned by Wendy Hudson. Wendy says: "I recently received a box of pictures and World War II items from an aunt of mine. The family I am researching is Redemann/Redman who immigrated from Germany starting around 1870. In with the pictures and some World War II items was a Civil War medal. I have researched the medal itself, so I know some things about it, but I do not have a clue how it relates to my family. Nowhere in my family research have I ever come across the name, Schlott. I am sure the medal does not directly belong to one of my Redman ancestors, as it was awarded before they would have arrived in America. I am guessing that it probably came down through the family via a marriage of someone to one of my Redman ancestors. Then again maybe it is just something someone in my family “found” somewhere and therefore it has nothing to do with my family. It is a beautiful medal (minus the ribbon and pin part) and the mystery behind it has me intrigued to find the family it belongs to and whether there is a connection to my family. What I know of the medal is that it is an Ohio “Veteran Volunteer” Medal."
