John Nelson Waddell, the son of James Waddell (1799-1882) and Jane McDonald (1805-1889), was born in Ohio County, (West) Virginia on 4 April 1841. He states "Ohio County" in his marriage record, but some family genealogies give his place of birth as Short Creek, Brooke County, West Virginia.

James Vance Waddell, a brother of John, enlisted in Company "H" 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry 23 Nov 1862. Sergeant Waddell was killed in battle at White Sulphur Springs, (W) Virginia on 26 Aug 1863. The children of John and Adessa: Permelia/Mildred "Millie" Agnes Waddell married Charles Franklin Hunter in 1888 and she died in 1896. Anna M. Waddell, born 1867/1869, married George Brua. She died in 1947. James Clark Waddell, born in 1879, died in 1952. Genevieve "Jennie" Waddell was born in 1881/1883 and married Fred A. Wilson, a lawyer. She died in 1961 after living for 50 years in San Bernardino, California.

Adessa Wilson Waddell died on 20 June 1923 in California at the age of 79. John died 29 July (30 per pension index card), 1926, in San Bernardino, California. John and Adessa are buried at Mountain View Cemetery, San Bernardino.
