JAMES M. TANNER enrolled at West Liberty on Aug. 14, 1862; age 17 (one card says 18); mustered in Aug. 25, 1862 at Wheeling. Farmer, born Washington Co., Pa. Seriously wounded in left hand; patient in U. S. General Hospital at Fortress Monroe, Va.; discharged at Fortress Monroe, VA, June 17, 1865, by order War Department dated May 3, 1865. Charles W. Tanner was probably known as "Wesley," in the opinion of this writer.
Wesley and James were the sons of John and Jane Tanner, residents of Marshall County, (West) Virginia, at the time of the 1850 census.

Tanner was discharged from service in the 12th Infantry on March 27, 1865, due to medical issues. - The West Virginia Death Records indicate that "Westley" Tanner, 23, a Soldier, son of "John & E.," died of Consumption on September 29, 1865 at Ohio County. - No pension claim was filed, so information is limited. However, it is the opinion of this writer, that "Westley" was Charles W. Tanner of the 12th West Virginia Infantry.
The parents are not found in the 1870 census, but the father, John A. C. Tanner, died in Ohio County on December 21, 1874.
At the time of the 1880 census of Triadelphia, Ohio County, JAMES TANNER 32, resided next door to his sister's family. Mary A. Tanner was the wife of Daniel Garrison, and their two children in 1880 were James M., 21, and Virginia, 19. - According to the death record of Mary A. Tanner Garrison, who died in West Alexander, Pa. on Nov. 19, 1906, her parents were John A. Tanner, born in Scotland, and Jane L. Laughlin (possibly Coughlin), born in Ireland. However, early records state their births in Pennsylvania.
James M. Tanner applied for a government pension in 1882 and received Certificate #332.734.
From the 1890 Census of Veterans and Widows: "James M. Tanner, Pvt., Company "D", 12 WV Inf. Enlisted 14 Aug 1862; discharged 26 Jun 1865; length, 2-10-12. Address: Roney's Point, W.Va."
James Tanner, 54, born in October 1845, is found in the 1900 census of Triadelphia District, Ohio County. He and his wife, Maggie C., 64, had been married for 17 years.
James M. Tanner, Farmer, resident of Roney's Point, died of Myocarditis on February 10, 1911. He was a widower. He and his wife, Margaret "Maggie" Orr, who died July 19, 1900, are buried at Stone Church Cemetery, Elm Grove, Ohio County, West Virginia.
