REUBEN BOYD, Company "A"
Reuben (or Ruben) G. Boyd, born 24 Jan 1846, was KIA at Piedmont, Augusta County, Va., 5 Jun 1864. He is buried at Staunton National Cemetery, Staunton, Va. He was the son of Levi Boyd and Mary --, early settlers in Cameron, Marshall County. Other children of Levi and Mary were: James M., born about 1845; Daniel W., born 28 Nov 1848; Robert H., born 19 Apr 1851; Adaline Amanda, born 13 Mar 1854; Joseph W., born 28 Sep 1856; William Boyd, born 18 Jul 1858; Franklin Lee Boyd, born 14 Jun 1861 and Charley Boyd, born 27 Dec 1863.
James M. Boyd joined for duty and enrolled in Company "A" 6th West Virginia Infantry on Aug. 6, 1861 at Fairmont; mustered in the same day at Grafton. "Laborer born in Marshall County, W.Va." In Jan. & Feb. 1862 he was "sick in hospital at Grafton." He was then present until he deserted on Sept. 6/8, 1863 at Fairmont. "Supposed to have gone to Cameron, Marshall Co., W.Va." "Apprehended from Desertion Oct. 23, 1864. Has not been restored to duty." "Apprehended Oct. 23, 1864 in Marion Co., W.Va. by Henry C. Wright Pvt Co A. 6 W.Va. Vol. Infty and now held in arrest. Per Special order, it was decided that James would return to duty and make up for the time he missed when he deserted. "Reported deserted April 8, 1863 on muster out rolls of original organization. Apprehended on and restored to duty without trial per S.O. No. 25, Hd. Qrs. Dept W.Va., Feby 19, 1865. Hanged at Piedmont, W.Va. April 5, 1865." (No information about how this happened.)
Levi Boyd enlisted 7 Aug 1861 as a Musician (Drummer) in Company "B" 7th West Virginia Infantry. He was discharged on a Certificate of Disability "18 Oct 1862 by reason of old age (46 years) and general debility. He filed an application for pension Nov 5/69, for Chronic Diarrhea and results and disease of breast." (Certificate 201.641) He received $6 per month from Oct 19/62 and $2 from March 3/1880. He died before 1890.
