James William Moffatt, born on November 18, 1825 in Harrison County, (W) Virginia, was the son of James William Moffatt, Sr., a veteran of the War of 1812, and Phoebe Fairchild, married in New Jersey in 1809.
On July 19, 1847, James W. Moffatt married Rhoda Harbert in Harrison County. In the 1860 census, their children were Isaah, James A., George G., and Orpha P. In 1870, the children at home were James A., George G., Orpha P., Lora M., and Mary A. - Residents of Roane County in 1880, the children were Orpha P., Laura M., Mary A., Margaret F., Ida F., and Benjamine W.
James Moffatt died in Roane County on August 15, 1885. His wife died in 1901. According to great-great-granddaughter, Ellen Reardon, Captain James William Moffatt is buried along with his wife, Rhoda Harbert Moffatt, in the Haynes Cemetery in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
