Thomas McGary, a farmer born in Marshall County, was 19 when he mustered in 16 Aug 1862 at Wheeling, (W)Va. His hand was accidentally shot off in May 1864, at Strasburg, Va. He was discharged 19 Dec 1864, at Cumberland, MD, by order of General Crook, by reason of amputation of arm.

In 1865, Thomas applied for and received a government pension; the certificate was #98819. In June 1905, his widow applied for a pension but no certificate was issued. He died 9 June 1905 and is buried at St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery, Cameron, Marshall County, W. Va.
