that there appears to have been an error in the record made by the clerk by
writing A. in the stead of J. in the name of Rebecca J Shook.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of
application for Pension No. 72,175, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.
There is but one Kupper or Kooffeur borne upon the Rolls of Comp “A” 12th Va Vols. The name Kupfer does not appear upon Rolls of that Co.

On the 6th day of November 1866 before me Housan Riggs Clerk of Circuit Court with afore said County and State personally appeared Rebecca Jane
Kupfer aged 30th years and a resident of said County & State who after being
duly sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of Frederick
Augustus Kupfer who was a private in Co. A commanded by Capt. H. Tomlinson
in the 12th West Virginia Infantry Volunteers in the War of 1861 and who was
killed in the battle of Berryville in Virginia on the 3rd day of September
1864.
She further declares that she was married to the said Frederick A. Kupfer on the 9 day of December 1856 at Marshall County W Va by one Charles Helsig
a minister of the Gospel and that there is a public record of her said
marriage and that she has remained a widow since the death of her said
husband.
And she further declares that there was born to her and her said husband during their said marriage the following children who are now under 16 years
of age and who reside with her at her home in said County - to wit George
Ameal Kupfer born Oct 5th 1857, Lena Arnetta Kupfer born November 26th 1859,
Henrietta Esther Kupfer born August 26th 1861 and Amelia Augusta Kupfer born
September 7th 1863.
Also personally appeared before me William Hammond and Henry Shook, residents of the County & State aforesaid, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duty sworn say that they were present and saw Mrs Rebecca Jane Kupfer sign her name to the foregoing declaration and they further swear that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with her that she is the identical person she represents herself to be and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Frederick Augustus Kupfer is buried at Hendrysburg Cemetery, Kirkwood, Belmont County, OH, next to his wife, who never remarried.
