SERVICE RECORD - 12th West Virginia Infantry

Born on October 26, 1842 in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, Norman E. Doman was the son of Joseph Doman and Nancy Margaret Nelson. Norman is found with his family in the 1850 census of Marshall County, (West) Virginia. (The birth place in his obituary is stated as Cameron, Marshall County, but the Adjutant General's record states he was a farmer, born Hampshire County.)

The mother, Nancy Margaret (Nelson) Doman, died in 1852 and is buried at Okey Kinney Cemetery, Marshall County.

At the time of the 1860 census of Marshall County, Norman was living with his father, Joseph, at Rock Lick - Beeler's Station. Norman's enlistment in the First (W) Virginia Infantry (3 Month) and then the 12th West Virginia Infantry are presented in the Service Records above.

Following the war, Norman Doman married Lydia Lenora Jackson at Tazewell County, Illinois on October 24, 1866. Their children were Emma Jane [Browne], Harry J., Frank, and Effie May.

By 1880, Norman lived with his family in Allerton, Wayne County, Iowa. He died there on October 31, 1920. - The Daily Times, Nov 1, 1920: "Norman E. Doman, 78, of Allerton, Ia. died of heart trouble at 5:15 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his son, F. H. Doman of 1206 Fourteenth and one-half street, Rock Island, where he had been visiting for three weeks. He was born in Cameron, W. Va. Oct. 26, 1842. The survivors are two sons, Harry of Allerton, Frank of Rock Island and two daughters, Mrs. Brown of Creston, Ia., and Mrs. Bell of Allerton. The body was taken this morning to Allerton where funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon."

DOMAN

Nancy Margaret Nelson Doman had a brother, George Washington Nelson, who also lived in Marshall County with his family in 1850. Before 1860, George moved to Moultrie County, Illinois. George's son, also George W. Nelson, was a resident of Bourbon, Douglas County, Illinois at the time of his enlistment in Company "B" 79 Illinois Infantry in August 1862. This soldier died on Dec. 14, 1862 at Nashville, Tenn., per burial record at Nashville National Cemetery.

Also in Company "B" 79 Illinois Infantry was Isaac Newton Doman, the brother of Norman Doman. The first cousin of George W. Nelson, he, too, died in service. Born Sep. 20, 1840 in Hampshire County, (W) Virginia per Illinois Soldier database, his death occurred June 25, 1863 at Bedford County, Tenn. He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tenn.

Brother, James Doman, who died in 1899, also served in an Illinois regiment and is buried in Peoria, Illinois. The other brothers not researched.
