JOHN C. BAKER, Company "A"


Service Record: At age 45, joined for duty & enrolled at Moundsville July 23, 1862; mustered in at Wheeling Aug. 16, 1862. Born in Franklin County, Pa. “Died of Chronic Diarrhea in Island Hospital at Harper’s Ferry on Dec. 31, 1864.” He is buried at Winchester National Cemetery, Va.

John Baker understated his age at enlistment. John, age 53, and his wife, Mariah (Games) Baker, are found in the 1860 census of Marshall County. Children listed that year were James, John, Ellen, Elizabeth, Lina, Franklin, and Jackson. Only the last two were born in (W) Virginia.

The widow, “Maria,” applied for a pension in 1865 but no certificate was issued. The minor child/children received Certificate #162.690.

A son, James A., born while they were still in Franklin County, Pa., married Mary Ann Drake in Marshall County in 1860. He served in Company A 11th West Virginia Infantry. Other family members not researched.
