WILLIAM H. ABERCROMBIE (C 12 W.Va. Inf. - Regimental Teamster) - Service Record: At age 31, joined for duty and enrolled on Aug. 14, 1862 at Cameron; mustered in at Wheeling on Aug. 23, 1862. “Wounded in action at Piedmont, Va. June 5, 1864, severely. Was left in hands of enemy at Staunton, Va. June 10, 1864. Died at Andersonville, Georgia Sept. 15, 1864.” He was a farmer, born in Ohio County, according to the records of the W.Va. Adj. Gen. - In the 1850 census, William H., 19, born Pa., lived in Marshall County with his parents, William and Sarah, and siblings, Margaret, James, Josiah, Mary Jane, Samuel, Sarah C., and Theodore H. He married Elizabeth Briggs in Marshall County on Feb. 29, 1856, at which time the marriage record states his place of birth as Washington, Pa. At the time of the 1860 census, William and Sarah were the parents of Sarah J., 3, and Mary A., 6 months. William is buried at Andersonville National Cemetery, Grave No. 8865. Sarah received a government pension, Certificate #62345.
