DEATH OF JAMES DANIEL HENDERSON, SR.

James Daniel Henderson, Sr., 80, of Wheeling, WV, died Friday, June 20, 2008 in the Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling.
He was born October 8, 1927 in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, the son of David L. and Elsie Jones Henderson.
Dan was a 1946 graduate of Triadelphia High School; a U. S. Marine, served in the Pacific Theater of War, WWII and a plank member of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines at Camp Lejune, NC; a member of St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church; a Mason, a member of Bates Lodge #33, AF & AM, and Scottish Rite; the BPO Elks Lodge; The Wheeling Area Genealogical Society, Wheeling Historical Society, Friends of Wheeling, and Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Henderson and brother, Dr. David L. Henderson, Jr.
Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Lou Dueker Henderson; three children, James Daniel Henderson, Jr. of Delray, FL, Kimberly Ann Byard-Swearingen of Tampa, FL, and David George Henderson of Wheeling, and grandson, Robert Christopher Byard, II of Tampa, FL.
There will be no viewing or funeral. A memorial service will he held at a future time at St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church. In March of 1992 the Lookout was born. Dan was a WVU Journalism major with a history minor when President Truman recalled the Marines into service. On June 20, 2008, he returned to WVU. This time to the School of Medicine.
He was a silent volunteer for WAGS. He proof read, collated, stapled, folded, stamped, labeled, sorted, and counted the newsletters for the first 14 years.
Dan knew the city of Wheeling and its history. He was an avid reader and many times did the research for articles.
This is the 17th year of the Lookout and his input will be sorely missed.
IMMIGRANT BOOK
Jim Thornton of Creative Impression Studios and Sean Duffy of the Ohio County Public Library are compiling a book celebrating the history of immigrant groups and neighborhoods in Wheeling, West Virginia. It will be largely a photographic history of immigrant groups, ethnicity, and culture in Wheeling and the local Ohio Valley from the mid-Nineteenth through the early Twentieth centuries. The book will include the prominent Wheeling neighborhoods of that period, especially South Wheeling and Benwood, Center Wheeling, East Wheeling, North Wheeling, and Wheeling Island. Also included Elm Grove, Woodsdale, Edgewood, Fulton, Warwood, and parts of Ohio near Wheeling.

At the annual West Virginia History Day on February 21, 2008 at the Cultural Center in Charleston, the following people were honored as History Heroes: PHYLLIS WALTERS, Wheeling Area Genealogical Society; JUDI HENDRICKSON, Wheeling Area Historical Society; DEBORAH M. SMITH, Wheeling Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. JAMES EDWARD DAGUE, a resident of Wheeling, also received the award after being nominated by the Marshall County Virtual Genealogy Society.
SYLVIA SLIGAR was a friend to many and a generous contributor this site and numerous others. She died suddenly at her home in California on November 5, 2007 at the age of 75. She has left a legacy that will benefit genealogy researchers forever. May she rest in peace. - Gloria Brinkmeier & Donna Mollaun wrote this OBITUARY as a tribute to Sylvia.
