MAXINE E. WELKER GIFFIN

Class of 1942

Maxine Elizabeth Welker, born in Pittsburgh on July 8, 1921, was the daughter of Alvin Roy and Minnie (Koontz) Welker. The parents are found in Pittsburgh in 1910 and 1920, and by 1930, still residents of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, they had the following children: Nellie R., Roy A., Helen O., Dorothy E., Norma A., Naomi M., Maxine E., and Homer A. The father, Alvin, worked as a carpenter. Nellie R., was a nurse in a hospital.

Sometime after the 1930 census, the Welker family moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. In 1940, Alvin R. and Minnie Welker were resident of West Providence Township, Bedford County, and their only child at home was Homer A. Maxine was a student nurse at St. Francis and she is found there in the 1940 census. The census record indicates that she had been living in Everett, Bedford County, in 1935.

Maxine married George Giffin, the son of Daniel and Stella (Shafer) Giffin. George died September 24, 2005, and Maxine died September 17, 2006. They are buried at Everett Cemetery, Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
