MARY WALSH

Class of 1915

A news article about the St. Francis graduating Class of 1915 states that this graduate was "Mary M. Walsh, Lucinda, Pa."

Without knowing the middle initial and hometown, this nurse would have been difficult to find. "Mary Walsh" is a common name, and there were other nurses of that name in later years.

Mary M. Walsh was the daughter of Margaret Walsh and Chris---- McLaughlin, according to her death record. Another name had been written first, and was then written over. The death information was provided by Mary's mother.

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Mary M. Walsh was residing with her mother, Margaret, and her step-father, John C. Seth, who had been married for 12 years, according to the record. Mary M. Walsh, step-daughter of Mr. Seth, and a "servant," was said to be 23, born in March 1877. The Seths had 7 other children, ranging in age from 2 months to 11 years.

The mother, Margaret (1857-1943), born in East Brady, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Stephen Walsh and Mary Cusick, both born in Ireland. In 1880, they were living in Knox, Clarion County, but Margaret's child, Mary M. Walsh, is neither mentioned nor located in 1880. Margaret's brother, Stephen Walsh, Jr. (1865-1950) became a Catholic priest.

A Mary Walsh was working as a nurse at Dixmont Hospital in 1910, but identity is not confirmed. A number of St. Francis graduates worked as nurses prior to receiving professional training.

In 1916, Mary M. Walsh, Nurse, is listed in the 1916 Pittburgh City Directory residing on Race Street, Pittsburgh.

In 1920, Mary Walsh, Nurse, 38, was employed by a private family on Aylesboro Avenue, Pittsburgh. She was born in Pennsylvania, and her parents were, as well.

Sadly, Mary M. Walsh, Nurse, of Lucinda, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, died of stomach cancer on October 14, 1927. Her mother, Mrs. John Seth, provided the information on the death certificate. Mary is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lucinda.
