Class of 1942

Helen Vrabel, 19, was a resident of the St. Francis Nurses' Home at the time of the 1940 Federal Census. The record indicates that in 1935, she lived in New Salem, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Based on the 1930 census, Helen was the daughter of Andrew and Veronica [Hegdus] Vrabel, both born in Czechoslovakia, and residents of Menallen Township, New Salem, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Vrabel was a coal miner. Helen's siblings in 1930 were Adam, John, Charles and Josephine, all born in Pennsylvania.

According to a news article in January 1946, Helen was on the nursing staff at Uniontown Hospital.

Connellsville Daily Courier, October 30, 1948 -- "Miss Helen V. Vrabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vrabel of New Salem, and Andrew Sabol, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sabol of Footedale, were married at 9 o'clock this morning in St. Paul's Cathedral, Pittsburgh."


OBITUARY: Helen V. Sabol, 93, of 3406 Wilmington Rd., New Castle passed away the evening of March 7, 2014 in her residence with her family by her side.

Helen was born in New Salem, PA on December 13, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Veronica Hegadus Vrabel. Mrs. Sabol was married to Andrew W. Sabol for 54 years. He preceded her in death on July 20, 2003. Helen was Roman Catholic and a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish.

Mrs. Sabol was a graduate of the St. Francis School of Nursing, class of 1942. After receiving her nursing degree, Helen worked at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, and the Rosalia Foundling Home. She then worked as a night nursing supervisor at the Uniontown Hospital, and later on for the Jameson Hospital in New Castle for 17 years, where she retired. Helen also worked while living in Lawrence County at Westminster College in the infirmary for several years.

Helen was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She was known for making the most wonderful Thanksgiving Day Turkey for her family. But the lights of her life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed every moment being with them and watching them grow. Helen will be sadly missed by all.

Survivors include her nine children; three sons, Christopher P. (Cathy) Sabol of Pulaski, PA, William J. (Brenda) Sabol of Silver Spring, MD, and Paul A. (Fiance JoEllen) Sabol of Pittsburgh, PA; six daughters, M. Christina (Eric) Hill of Gaithersburg, MD, M. Deborah Sabol of Pittsburgh, M. Ursula (Craig) Hazley of Kent, OH, Mary Ann Sabol of Pittsburgh, M. Rita Sabol of New Castle, and M. Teresa Sabol of Upper Marlboro, MD; five grandchildren, Julie (Daniel) Popa, Thomas (Fiance Victoria) Sabol, Elza (Michael) McKenna, Elisabeth Hazley, and Philip Hazley; and four great-grandchildren, Ava Popa, Sophia Popa, Sage Adair McKenna, and Foster Kind McKenna.

In addition to her parents and husband Andrew, Helen was preceded in death by two infant brothers and one infant sister; four brothers, Adam Vrabel, Charles Vrabel, John Vrabel, and younger six year old brother, Andy Vrabel; and her sister, Josephine Holus.

Calling hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill Street.

A procession will leave the funeral home Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. for Mary Mother of Hope Parish, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. William P. Siple, parochial vicar of Mary Mother of Hope Parish will officiate. Burial and Rite of Committal will be in St. Marys Cemetery following mass. Contributions can be made in her name to Mary Mother of Hope Parish.

HUSBAND'S OBITUARY--- New Castle News (PA) - Tuesday, July 22, 2003 -- Andrew W. Sabol - Retired carpenter Andrew W. Sabol, 90, of 3406 Wilmington Road, died the evening of July 20, 2003, in Jameson Hospital. - Born Nov. 30, 1912, in Homestead, Pa., he was a son of the late Michael and Anna Van Kula Sabol. - He was married to the former Helen V. Vrabel for 54 years. She survives. - Mr. Sabol was a carpenter for 25 years with Local 268 in Sharon and for 10 years with Citizens Lumber Co. in New Castle. - A World War II Marine veteran, he was a tech sergeant with Casual Co. MB serving from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Sabol, who saw action in the Pacific Theater, was awarded the Presidential Citation and the Bronze Star for heroism. - He was a member of the American Legion Post 343. - Mr. Sabol was a member of St. Mary Church of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. - Survivors include six daughters and three sons-in-law, M. Christina and Eric Hill of Gaithersburg, Md., M. Deborah Sabol and Mary Ann Sabol, both of Pittsburgh, M. Ursula and Craig Hazley of Youngstown, M. Rita Sabol of New Castle and M. Teresa and Timothy Lesage of Arlington, Va.; three sons, Christopher P. Sabol of New Castle, William J. Sabol of Washington, D.C., and Paul A. Sabol of Pittsburgh; a brother, George Sabol of Cleveland; two sisters, Dorothy Maholivich of Augusta, Ga., and Eleanor Malone of Sugar Valley, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Elza Cracco, Douglas Lesage, Sam Lesage, Julie Sabol, Thomas Sabol, Elizabeth Hazley and Philip Hazley. - He was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael Sabol, John Sabol and William Sabol, and four sisters, Elizabeth Wassil, Ann Cannon, Margaret Smith and Marie Mancino. - Calling hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S.
