Josephine Vogel, born August 29, 1897, was the daughter of Kasper/Casper J. and Adelinda (Pfaff) Vogel, both born in Germany, and married in Allegheny County in 1886.

According to census records, Kasper/Casper and Adelinda immigrated separately to the United States in the early 1880s. At the time of the 1900 census of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, they had been married for 13 years, and had 10 children, 7 of whom were living. They lived on Grant Avenue in Millvale, and Kasper owned a Butcher Shop. The children's names, as spelled in the census record, were Clements J., Anna M., Bertha F., Anthoneyna (Adelinda) A., John A., Emma, and Anna J.

By 1910, "Kaspar" and Adelinda had 14 children, 9 of whom were living. The names of the children still at home were Joseph, Bertha F., Adelinda A., Emma, Josephine A., Gulius E., George R., and Margaret. - (There might have been a daughter, Margaret, but it is more likely that Margaret, age 2 in the 1910 census, was Loretta Barbara Vogel, born about 1908.)

The father died in 1917, and in 1920, the mother resided in the family home with Clement Jos., Bertha, Adelinda, Emma, Josephine, Julius, George, and Loretta.

Kasper and his wife, Adelinda, were deceased before the census of 1930. Living in the Grant Avenue home was George, 23, the head of the household, with $2000 in property and no occupation. Adelinda A., 33, and Josephine, 29, were both Registered Nurses at a hospital. Their sister, Emma, 31, had no occupation. - Loretta was a student nurse at St. Francis in 1930, and was not living at home.

In the 1940 census, Emma, Josephine, and George, were living together, and Josephine was employed as a nurse. Sister Loretta, was also living there. Loretta Barbara went on to be a doctor, and worked at state hospitals, such as Mayview and Woodville. She died suddenly on August 4, 1965.

Josephine, born August 29, 1897, died in July 1972; Adelinda A. died May 11, 1985.

Josephine and Adelinda Vogel graduated from the school of nursing in 1923, and Loretta in 1930. Another "Adelinda" graduated in the Class of 1961. Adelinda C. Ader was the granddaughter of Josephine and Adelinda Vogel's sister, Anna Marie, who married Joseph Ott in 1908. Their daughter, Adelinda Catherine Ott, married Louis J. Ader, and their daughter was the 1961 graduate.

Services will be held today, Saturday, for Josephine A. Vogel, 464 North Ave., Millvale. She was 74. [Note: Born Aug 29, 1897.]

Miss Vogel was a retired science teacher at Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in Wilkinsburg.

She is survived by four sisters: Mrs. Anna Marie Ott, 877 Reserve St., Millvale; Sr. M. Adelina Vogel, O.S.F., Mount Alvernia Convent, Millvale; Adelinda and Emma Marie Vogel, both of 464 Reserve St. Millvale.

She was a member of the St. Anthony's Christian Mothers Society of Millvale.
