ONA VERNON HENSLER

Class of 1926

Ona M. C. Vernon was born February 15, 1904 in Munhall, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were John and Caroline (Belavskas or Beliauskas) Vernon, both born in Lithuania.

In Pittsburgh, on November 24, 1938, Ona, 34, married Paul Joseph Hensler, 36, born July 22, 1902 in Monongahela City, Pennsylvania. His parents were Charles and Margaret (Klein) Hensler. Paul was working as a clerk, and she was a nurse. Ona's father was deceased at the time of her marriage, and she had been living with her mother in Homestead.

Paul's brother, Carl Hensler, was a Catholic Priest, eventually a Monsignor, in the Pittsburgh Diocese. Two of Paul's sisters were graduates of the school of nursing at St. Francis. Cecelia graduated in 1925, and Mildred in 1933.

At the time of the 1940 census, Paul and Ona were residing in Homestead with Ona's mother, as well as her sisters, Beatrice and Alberta. Paul and Ona were the parents of an infant son, Charles.

Paul Joseph Hensler died in March 1984. His obituary, as well as his son's, indicate that Paul and Ona had two daughters, Ona and Carla.

The death date of Ona is not known. Her daughter, Carla, married in 1976 and Ona was already deceased. Ona is not listed in the Social Security Death Index.

SISTER'S OBITUARY--- MACKELL - Alberta V. (Ellie) of Ft. Lauderdale died Wednesday, September 3, 1998. A resident for 35 years coming from Homestead, PA. Predeceased by her husband, Wallace Owen Mackell. Survived by her son, Thomas O. Mackell; daughter, Susie Jones; granddaughters, Laura White, Carolyn Jones, Sara Jones, and Kristy Mackell; grandson, Thomas O. Mackell, Jr.; nieces, Ona McLaughlin and Carla Tumpson; nephew, Charles Hensler and their Children. Burial will be at Prince of Peace/St. Casimir Cemetery, Baldwin, PA.

SON'S OBITUARY--- Dr. Charles J. Hensler, 69, of Elkton, MD, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at home. - Dr. Hensler was a graduate of Saint Wendelin's High School of Pittsburgh, PA. - He then served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1963 before returning to his studies and receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Duquesne University of Pittsburgh, PA in 1965. - After receiving his Bachelor's Degree, he completed his studies by obtaining a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Iowa State University in 1969. - After completing his education, Dr. Hensler was a Senior Research Supervisor for the DuPont Company in Deep Water, NJ, for more than 30 years. - Dr. Hensler was a member of the Saengerbund German Club in Newark, DE, and president of the Cecil County Arts Council. - He enjoyed gardening, fishing, fly tying and cooking. - He is survived by three children, Carla M. Hensler of Pittsburgh, PA, Mark P. Hensler and wife, Maura, of Zelienople, PA, and Luke E. Hensler of Freedom, PA; two grandchildren, Jacqueline and Jacob Hensler of Zelienople, PA; and two sisters, Ona McLaughlin of Connecticut, and Carla Tumpson of Pittsburgh, PA. - Dr. Hensler was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara J. Hensler, in March 2007. - A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009, at 7 p.m., at R.T. Foard & Gee Funeral Home, 259 E. Main St., Elkton, MD, where the family will receive friends after 6 p.m., prior to the service. - Interment will be private.
