LAURA C. THOMAS

Class of 1915

Laura C. Thomas, born August 2, 1888, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, was the youngest of the ten children of Anthony Peter Thomas and Theresa Rachael Markle. Siblings were Mary, Catherine, Rose, Edward, Gertrude, Joseph, Rhabanus, Evelyn Agnes (Lena), and Elizabeth.

The mother, born in 1845, died in 1895. The father, born in 1844, died in 1923. They are buried at Saint Vincent Cemetery, Latrobe, Westmoreland County.

In 1930, Laura Thomas was a roomer on S. Mathilda Street, with another nurse, Mary Siebert, 38, who was probably Minnie Siebert/Seibert, Class of 1923. Numerous hospital nurses lived in the vicinity.

An article in The Pittsburgh Press, January 17, 1936, regarding the Sixth District State Nurses' Association, states: "Miss Laura C. Thomas, St. Francis, third vice president."

The 1940 census finds Laura Thomas, RN at a hospital, residing with Sophie Weigand, St. Francis Class of 1919, on Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh. Mary E. Seibert, 49, a nurse at St. Francis Hospital, lived there as well.

In 1950, Laura Thomas, 62, a resident of Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, born in Unity Township, Pa., sailed on the "Queen Elizabeth" from New York to Cherbourg, for a two-month trip.

Laura C. Thomas died March 30, 1979 and is buried at Saint Vincent Cemetery.
