WHAT HAPPENED TO WANDA?

The SZWED family adopted the surname SMITH, early on, but it was not used consistently.

Matthew Smith, son of Stanley and Antonia (Suchocki) Smith (as written in his application for compensation), was born in Everson, Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1897. He served in World War I, sustained a serious wound, and his left leg was amputated.

In the 1920 census, Stanley and Antonette Smith are found in Upper Tyrone, Fayette County, with the follow children: William, Stella, Walter, Vanda, Amelia, Marie and Edward. Stanley was employed as a brick yard laborer.

Wanda graduated from the school of nursing in 1929. In the 1930 Federal Census, Wanda Zwed, who was Wanda Szwed, graduate nurse, employed at a hospital, was a boarder at a residence on Pacific Avenue, Pittsburgh. Other nurses lived at the residence, including Katherine Kleber, Class of 1929; Blance Spada, Class of 1930, and Veronica Gordon, Class of 1929.

Nurse Wanda Szwed appears in the 1934 Pittsburgh City Directory living on South Pacific Avenue.

In 1940, Private Duty Nurse, Wanda Szwed, 32, was a lodger at a residence on South Evangeline Street, Pittsburgh.

Wanda's sister, Stella Dorothy Szwed Rist, died in 1962. Wanda is not listed among Stella's surviving siblings.

Nothing more is known about Wanda Szwed/Smith.
