Adelaide Szwed Goodison, RN, 94, a resident of Harmon House Convalescent Center, Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, July 4, 1996, in Frick Hospital and Community Health Center, Mount Pleasant. She was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Upper Tyrone Township, a daughter of the late Michael and Frances Sczepanski Szwed. Adelaide formerly resided on Walnut Avenue in Scottdale and was a member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Parish of Everson. She moved back to the Scottdale area in 1965 following her retirement from the VA Hospital in Boston, where she served as head Registered Nurse for 19 years. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a nurse. She was honorably discharged in November 1946, attaining the rank of Captain, and was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. During the war, she helped to establish the first Hospital Transfer point in Atlanta, Ga., where she served as a base nurse. She is survived by two nephews, George Briercheck and wife Mary of Charlotte, N.C., and John E. Szwed and wife Susan of Connecticut; and three great-nephews, Mark S. Briercheck, G. Scott Briercheck and wife Deborah and Matthew Szwed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl P. Goodison; a sister, Anna Briercheck; and three brothers, Frank, John and Victor Szwed. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Friends will be received at the ROBERT B.
