MARIE ANNA SZUBA NORRIS

Class of 1918

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census of Robinson Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Joseph Szuba, 40, resided with his wife, Nettie, 34, and their children: Joseph, 12; Stella, 7; Mary, 5 [born Jan 1895]; Steven, 3; Edna, 2; Agnes 5 months. Also in the home were Michael and Stella Kubisiak, brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Joseph.

The father, Joseph Szuba, died September 11, 1906, after a horse stepped on his head and fractured his skull in Kennedy Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He lost his life while rescuing his 11 year old daughter, who was evidently Marie - "Mary" in the 1900 census. His burial place is St. Adalbert Cemetery in McKees Rocks.

In the 1910 census, a daughter, Rosalia, 3, was added to the family, so the mother was newly pregnant at the time of her husband's death. - Walter was called Anthony in the 1910 census. Joseph and Antonia had a daughter, Annie, age one, who died in 1891.

In the 1920 census of Coraopolis, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Marie Szuba, a 25 year old hospital nurse, was living on Ridge Avenue with her widowed mother, Antonia, born in France, and her siblings, Stella, 26; Stephen, 23; Edna, 22; Agnes, 20; Frances, 18; Walter, 16, and Rosella, 12. The mother, Antonia, had immigrated in 1889 and was naturalized in 1891.

Marie A. Szuba and Elmer C. Norris obtained a marriage license in Pittsburgh, according to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on June 25, 1920. They married, date unknown, and moved to New Jersey.

At the time of the 1930 census, Elmer and Marie lived in Wenonah, Gloucester County, New Jersey, where Elmer was employed as a clerk at the steam railroad. Their children were Frances M., Lois I., and Elmer C., Jr. They had another daughter, Phyllis, about 1931.

In 1934, Elmer Charles Norris filed a claim for compensation for his service in the Army during World War I. In his application, he stated he was born in Woodsfield, Ohio, and had lived at South Millvale Avenue, Allegheny County, at the time of his enlistment. He gave his wife's name as Marie Anna Szuba.

Marie's mother, Antonia H. "Nettie" (Hedwig/Hedwid) Szuba, born in 1866, died in April 14, 1937 St. Francis Hospital. Her death record indicates that her husband was Joseph Szuba and they were both born in Germany. She is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery, Moon Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Elmer Charles Norris died 23 July 1964 in New Jersey. Marie was born January 4, 1895, confirmed by Social Security Death Record, and she died in December 1984.
