BLANCHE SPADA McCULLOUGH

Class of 1930

In a news article about the St. Francis Class of 1930, this student was "Blanche J. Spada."

Blanche Spada was born in Italy on August 13, 1908. Her parents were Leopold Spada, a coal miner, and his wife, Giuditta "Julia" Ghibesi Spada. According to the Naturalization application of Leopold in 1921, he was born in Schilpario, Italy, and he arrived in the United States on January 17, 1910.

In Leopold Spada's application for a passport in 1924, he stated he had lived in the United States from 1901 through 1924, but records indicate he had traveled back to Italy during that time, and had lived in Connecticut before settling in Pennsylvania. The son, Anthony, was born in 1905 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the younger daughter, Esther, was born in Italy in September 1910.

In the 1920 Federal Census of Bentleyville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, Blanche's siblings were Tony and Ester.

The father, Leopold, became Lewis Spada, and was among the 195 men tragically killed in a coal mine explosion at Mather Mine, Greene County, Pennsylvania, on May 19, 1928. - From Wikipedia: "Subsequent investigations as well as reports from survivors suggest that the incident was the result of a methane gas and dust explosion that was triggered by an arc from a battery-powered locomotive being operated in the affected area. A total of 279 men were estimated to have been underground at the time, 209 of whom were in the affected area when the gas-dust mixture ignited. Of those 209, 193 died in the explosion or were suffocated by afterdamp, 2 died in hospitals after being rescued, and 14 escaped to safety."

Blanche graduated from the school of nursing in 1930. In the 1930 Federal Census, Blanche Spada, graduate nurse, employed at a hospital, was a boarder at a residence on Pacific Avenue, Pittsburgh. Other nurses lived at the residence, including Katherine Kleber, Class of 1929; Wanda Zwed, who was Wanda Szwed, Class of 1929, and Veronica Gordon, Class of 1929.

Blanche married Cyrus McCullough. At the time of the 1940 census, Blanche and Cyrus lived on Penn Avenue. Cyrus was a sales clerk for an oil company, and Blanche was a nurse at a doctor's office. They had an infant son in 1946, but he died at birth.

In the 1951 Pittsburgh City Directory, Blanche McCullough was a nurse at the City Department of Health.

Blanche's mother, born in Milan, Italy in 1877, died at Torrence State Hospital, Westmoreland County, in 1963. She and her husband are both buried at Monongahela Cemetery, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Blanche Spada McCullough died September 3, 1989. Her husband, Cyrus J. McCullough, died on May 16, 1980. They are both interred at the Temple of Memories Mausoleum at Allegheny Cemetery.
