Beatrice, born at County Longford, Ireland on November 17, 1896, was the sister of Marcella Sommers, Class of 1916, and Margaret Sommers, Class of 1927. Their real surname was Hourican but for whatever reason, they all used the surname Sommers/Somers.
Marcella, the oldest sister of Beatrice, emigrated to the United States in 1906. Beatrice's parents, Philip and Margaret (Collumb/Columb) Hourican, didn't arrive in the United States from Ireland until 1922. Philip died in 1928 and Margaret in 1957.
Gleaned from genealogical records are the following children of Philip and Margaret (Collumb/Columb) Hourican: Marcella (oldest), Owen, Hugh, Bridget, Beatrice, Philip, James, Patrick, Margaret, and twins, Donald and Daniel.
At the time of the 1940 census of Pittsburgh, the widowed mother, Margaret Hourican, 69, lived on Meade Street with the following children: Owen, 45, Beatrice, 38, James, 36, Pat, 33, Margaret, 32, and Donald, 31.
In the Pittsburgh City Directories, Beatrice and Margaret are listed as Sommers.
Likewise, their nursing licenses were in the Sommers surname. - From the list of Pennsylvania Registered Nurses, 1940-1941, published by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners: "Beatrice J. Sommers, 7143 Meade St., Pittsburgh" and "Margaret Sommers, 7143 Meade St., Pittsburgh." (Marcella was married in 1917 and moved away.)
Beatrice didn't marry. Her death occurred on October 16, 1967. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Her parents and many siblings are also buried there.
