Class of 1915
A news article about the St. Francis graduating Class of 1915 states that this graduate was "Barbara M. Seigmann, Johnstown, Pa." However, she signed her surname as "Siegmann."
In the 1900 Federal Census, Barbara (spelled Barbra), 11, born in July 1888, and her sister Bertha (spelled Bartha), 17, were living with their mother, Mary A., and stepfather, Joseph Nicholman (as spelled in census). Joseph also had a son, Michael. Barbara was a "baker." This family (Neckerman) appears on a passenger list from Bremen that arrived in New York on August 29, 1899, with Homestead, Pennsylvania their destination. They must have returned to Germany after the census, albeit briefly.
In 1910, Barbara "Sigman," 21, step-daughter of Leonard Gruber, and daughter of his wife, Mary A., was living on Ross Street in Duquesne, Allegheny County. Mary A. Gruber indicated she had been married 3 times. Also in the home was Clara "Wabiel," no relation to the head of household, but she was Clara Waibel, the granddaughter of Mary A., and the daughter of Bertha Siegmann, who had married Ludwig Karl Waibel and lived in Johnstown.
The mother, Mary Gruber, born November 16, 1861 (per death record), died of colon cancer on August 23, 1910. Leonard Gruber, born in Germany in 1865, died of "Tuberculosis of lungs and kidneys" on March 31, 1912. They are buried at Saint Joseph's Cemetery, West Mifflin, Allegheny County.
In the 1911 City Directory of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Barbara Siegmann is listed as a domestic. As stated, her sister, Bertha R. Siegmann Waibel, lived in Johnstown.
On July 13, 1917, Miss Barbara Marie Siegmann, a Professional Nurse, residing at 4614 Friendship Ave., Pittsburgh, applied to become a Naturalized Citizen. She stated she had been born in Wurzburg, Germany on June 16, 1888. She emigrated from Bremen on August 20, 1901 and arrived in New York on September 1, 1901. She signed her name, "Miss Barbara Marie Siegmann."
At the time of the 1920 census of Pittsburgh, Barbara M. Siegmann, Trained Nurse - Own Practice, was a lodger on Friendship Avenue, Pittsburgh. Other nurses also lodged there, including Teresa M. Mayer, Class of 1914, and Hilda (Hildagarde) Knauf, Class of 1917.
In Chester, Hancock County, West Virginia, on April 29, 1927, Barbara Marie Siegmann, 38, born in Germany, and living in Pittsburgh, married David Watkins Evans, born in Allegheny County, living in Pittsburgh. They were married in the Rectory of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The death of Barbara Marie Siegmann Evans occurred on November 25, 1955, in Johnstown. On her death record, her maiden name was spelled Sigman, her date of birth was June 16, 1888, and her parents were Joseph and Mary (Thiel). Her occupation was Retired Registered Nurse. She is buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Allegheny County. (Note: Death record of mother gives her maiden name as Fleitz, not Thiel.)
