According to the 1900 Census of Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, Nellie Saunders was born in July 1888 in Maryland. Her sister, Hazel Elizabeth, was listed as Elizabeth H., born in 1890 in Maryland. Their parents were Joseph C. Saunders (also Sanders), born in Cumberland, Maryland, and Nellie Millman, born in Ohio. The parents were married in Maryland in 1885.

The father died after the 1900 census.
